I was reading this article about PSU, and I guess Russ Rose has better get control over "attitude issues".
[ftp]http://www.collegian.psu.edu/archive/2006/11/11-13-06tdc/11-13-06dsports-01.asp[/ftp]
Excerpts:
"We're not anywhere near where we were when we were playing our best volleyball this season," Penn State head coach Russ Rose said after the win. "Whether we'll return to that level of play, I don't really know, but I'm not real happy with the efforts in practice and some of the attitudes and the state of the program as I see it right now." . . "Coming off of how we played a couple nights ago, and the impact a match like that has on young people, I thought we were OK [Saturday]," Rose said. "I don't think the statistics reveal the challenges that our team really has."
Those young people are freshmen setter Alisha Glass and outside hitter Megan Hodge, who have been asked in their first season to carry a bulk of the load for one of the nation's more respected college programs. . . . "We've got some people that aren't on the same page with what the needs of the team are and what the expectations are to play at a high level for a three and a half to four month period," Rose said. "Maybe they'll develop that, maybe they won't, but certainly there's some people that were better six weeks ago then they are right now."

Rose may be saying that in part to help certain team members get it that attitudes do play a part in the recent losses. Maybe it's part of his effort to change the team chemistry.

The team may be stacked with stars but it is also the job of the coach to get ALL players, starters and bench players, buy into his system and philosophy.
USC 2002/2003 teams were stacked as well, but the players committed to one another and bought into Haley's system of "team first, personal glory second". The result was that most of those players graduated with 2 national championship rings.

Yanz = Amazing setter that could start on 95% of the D1 teams
Halloway = Great outside hitter than can pass and play defense that could also start for 95% of D1 teams
Kate Price = Great passer, and hitter on the outside, not getting the chance she did her freshmen year when she was BIG 10 fresh of year.
The list goes on... too many people and not enough PT.

Maybe a few of these players may already start thinking of possibly transferring out? Any team looking to fill in position vacancies in 07?

I think a lot of teams go through an end of season test of attitudes....especially with those who aren't playing and think they can do better than the starters. In fact, some bench warmers secretly hope that the starters screw up so they can get into future games....and maybe putting the second stringers into late season games may be a way to let the weary "go to" players catch a breather. I suspect the freshmen , who are probably not as conditioned as the upperclassmen, are feeling some major fatigue these days.

Yes, you're right but that's why USC won national titles with a stacked team because they were all team players and they all connected. Now that's something that obviously PSU hasn't figured out yet. But when they do, they will seek another national title.

Everything is fine as long as you are winning. When you start losing, that's when you find out what people are really made of.

So who do you think the culprits are? I think it's okay for us to speculate on this since Russ Rose opened the door on this one? Who's got the 'tude?

My biggest guess is Kate Price. He had wanted her at libero, but has commented she isn't interested.

I actually give Russ Rose kudos for saying this to the press. PSU has a LOT of issues with passing, setting, and even clutch-time hitting that they haven't had in the past. It's a lesson that you can't just lose an all american setter and libero and be right back at the top or better than you were the year before.
I almost feel like schools (especially in the big ten) were intimidated to play PSU. Well, now the protective shield is down and their weaknesses have been exploited by a couple teams. It's only going to give other teams confidence that they can stack up against them and beat them. I don't want to say that the "floodgates are open", but I feel like PSU will take at least one more loss in the regular season, and probably take an early tourney exit.
When you can't pass well and you don't have a great setter, you're in a lot of trouble as the season wears on and your hitters start to lose their legs. The outsides on PSU better be ready to carry a load.
That said, I think they are stacked with talent more than any other team in the country. I just think they are 1-2 years away from being a legitimate national championship threat.

I don't know about PSU and the chemistry, but one potential problem that I could think of is the leadership on the floor and during training. PSU is starting young players (sophs and freshies) who may not be comfortable about being vocal leaders on the team. On the other hand, you have upperclassmen (who traditionally assume leadership roles on the team) who have little roles to play on the court. So you could have leadership vacuum there. Yes the youngsters are the starters but who are the leaders on the team?
