Stats show a very balanced offense from the US with Metcalf at 11, Haneef and Scott at 9 each, and Wilkins, Bown both at 7 a piece.

Yes... 9th.
The US quite unlucky though. In the second round, they got stuck in the most difficult pool. They had the three best teams in the world in their pool... Brazil, Russia and China. These three teams are easily a step above everyone else. The only match the US probably should have won but lost in 5 was to Azerbaijan. We got beat by China, Russia, and Azerbaijan, but won our match against Germany. We had no shot of placing higher. If the pools were a bit more even, we would probably have placed higher.
The other pool was full of lesser teams.... that the US at least has a decent shot of defeating: Poland, Italy, Cuba, Serbia and Mont., Japan, Turkey and TPE.

Not yet - US have to win their game against TUR in order to finish 9th. If they lose it will end up 10th.

But there were 12 teams, right?
(Could be worse. Could be stabbed.)
