I'm not doubting that she's the best player or the player with the most college potential in the East Bay. High School player of theyear is a different matter though. She missed half the season and two other teams in the East Bay made the state final. (Foothill was the other, fwiw Foothill was undefeated until the state final and played a tougher schedule than St. Mary's) You don't think there might have been someone who played a whole season on a more successful team who might have deserved some consideration? I suppose the question is whether a half season of Tarah Murrey outweighs a full season of one of the other players in the CC Times coverage area. I can't say, but one of the Campo players could have been very deserving. I think some of their players might consider walking on to D-I programs. None of their players are really big or physical. Their entire front-court lineup was listed at 5'10" except for their setter. I even heard a couple of their starting players aren't even playing club, and may have finished their competitive VB careers. That Campo squad wasn't the protypical state championship team with at least one or two starting players taller than 6'. Certainly she's very good. I know she's got back-row skills, but I thought that she rarely played back-row at Mitty.

It's a measure of the state of college recruiting that "back row" skills don't matter a lot in recruiting hitters and middles. Two years ago, Whitney Dosty was deemed the number 2 recruit in the country. She's a great prospect, but it's not even that clear that she has front row skills at this point in that she spent most of her freshman year learning to hit from the left.

I'm really anxious to see what happens with Janet Okagbaa next year. Okagbaa might hit the ball harder than Klineman, but lacks the overall game that Alix has. But does anyone think that Okagbaa has much of a future at Stanford with Waller playing so well? And everytime I saw her on the bench this year, she looked so out of it and looked as if she didn't want to be there.

I know that academics are very important to Okogbaa and I think that playing volleyball was just a means to getting a free education at a fine institution. I would be very surprised to see Okogbaa transfer to another school because of playing issues. From what I observed, she seemed very happy to be apart of the team and gelled with them.

I hope your right about Okagbaa. Alot of people talk about how good she could be, but "could be" isn't relevant when you have a team stacked full of amazing players who are ready for the college game.

Tarah has never played for Scott Bishop at Golden Bear. She played for Sara Waltman for 14s and has played for Emerson or Shelby Salonga (or both) since. Tarah is one of the best all-around players to come out of Northern California.
It will be fun to see the 18s compete again this year. Vision vs. Golden Bear should be fun. Plus Gold Cal and many of the 17s will be strong. Should be a great year for NCVA.

Well - I knew she played 16s in her freshman year and Scott Bishop is the 16s coach this year, but I didn't know if he was two years ago. Now that I think of it, he moved up to 16s last season, but I don't remember who her 16s coaches were (so that would be the Salongas while Lee Maes was the Forefront coach?). I really don't follow much club VB except when it involves high-profile college recruits. BTW - the last time I posted this pic (taken at Bishop O'Dowd), someone noted that Emerson and Shelby Salonga were up in the corner. I think maybe three players on both St Mary's and Bishop O'Dowd are playing for GB 18-Forefront. ![](http://www.pbase.com/bearclause/image/69579750.jpg)

Based on their contribution to their respective teams Carico, Glass and Hooker should have ranked above Dosty & Okogbaa. Engle at #2 & Hooker at #3 could have been a possibility.

The best indoor player to have come out of the Bay Area would be Kerri Walsh.
I have seen both Gysin and Murrey play HS and club volleyball. As 11th graders, I would say that Gysin was a better over-all player than Murrey: more dynamic hitter, excellent passer and defender, great jumpserve, good court vision. Because of injuries, we haven't seen Gysin's potential in college although we saw glimpses of greatness this past season. Next year, she should be much improved. I have no doubt Murrey will also be an impact player in college.

Stanford academics blah blah blah yadda yadda etc etc.... but how many of those vaunted Stanford "student athletes" would get a callback if they were to fill out this form? Would any of them be good enough to play for this team?
