NU volleyball recruit to play at Colorado State instead BY TODD HENRICHS / Lincoln Journal Star Friday, May 04, 2007 - 12:53:12 am CDT One of four players to sign a letter of intent with the Nebraska volleyball program last November, Danielle Minch instead will play at Colorado State next season.
Terri Minch, Danielle’s mother, said the family had a change of heart last month after she said Nebraska coach John Cook asked that Danielle consider enrolling at a junior college for a semester.
As a so-called “grayshirt,” Minch would have enrolled at Nebraska for the 2008 spring semester and thus would not have counted against NU’s 2007 scholarship total. Minch had qualified academically, her mother said.
“Until that point, Dani was ready to come to Nebraska to play,” Terri Minch said. Earlier Thursday, Cook confirmed that Nebraska had released the Sterling, Colo., senior from her letter of intent by mutual agreement, and at this point, NU had no plans to add another player to the roster for the 2007 season.
Minch, the 49th-ranked senior in PrepVolleyball.com’s 2007 national rankings, initially committed to Nebraska in April 2006. But by the time she signed her letter of intent in November, Nebraska had decided to redshirt Christina Houghtelling because of injury. That meant Nebraska would be over the 12-scholarship limit in 2007.
The Huskers gained one scholarship when freshman Brooke Bartek elected to transfer to Kentucky following last season. Still, Nebraska had 10 players on its spring roster, with standouts Brooke Delano and Tara Mueller joining the program in August.

What a joke - looses one to CU....this was a calculated move by Cook when he realized that schollie would be better spent. Good for this player that it worked out for her and CU. Funny how some people use the media to try and put slant on things.....and look at the quote "has no plans to add another player to the 2007 roster" This should be interesting to watch unfold.

The coach was trying to play it safe. Not knowing if Christina was coming back he did offer to Minch. Seeing that Christina was coming back he now had the following situation: 1. Take away the scholarship from another player on the squad. 2. Ask Minch to be a "grayshirt". He played the game and lost a good player for the future. He is still set for next season. I know it is a business but did not like the approach he took. ESTRELLA

ESTRELLA There was no scholarship issue here - You don't get it.....Bartek transferred....he could have very well kept her (Minch) even with Houghtelling coming back...this decision of Cook's was made long after Bartek transferred.....read between the story lines, look at the timeframe....

Cook committed Minch, Licht, Mueller and Delano knowing that he didn't have enough room whether Houghtelling graduated or not....Bartek was still on the team then. So Cook planned on trimming someone at that point already. So he trims Bartek, evaluates his incoming kids for another club season, then trims the one he likes least from that group.
I'm gald for Dani she's heading to a program that wants her.

Agreed.... he had this all planned out. I doubt that he let the poor girl know that her Scholarship was possibly in jepordy.... at least until he KNEW he didn't have one for her. He may have prevented her from taking a scholarship at her second choice school.
Sure seems slimier than those two Utah girls deciding to transfer.

This isn't the first time in recent memory that he has "pushed" someone out the door. It's not against the rules, but it still smells bad. Just my opinion ...

So does Nebraska have a scholarship now? Did they do this to make room for either Salvo or Anderson?

Wow!! You all sure deducted a lot from an article that only had a quote from a mom. The only thing I ever read prior to this was that they thought she would need to redshirt from the get go. I know how much some of you hate John Cook but your assumptions about how this went down are simply unfounded unless you know the Minch family personally. For one last time, Brooke Bartek was a HUGE recruiting mistake, on and OFF the court! What I deduct from this short article is that there were some possible academic concerns if they wanted her to go to a JUCO first. IF some superstar/stud recruit ends up in Lincoln in August I'll take this back.

Eov...there were no academic concerns. Dani was admitted to Nebraska. There are things to deduct here, however you are reaching to deduct the ones that don't paint the Nebraska program in a bad light.
Dani is a great player and will do very well for Coach Hilbert.

If John Cook indeed screwed this girl over and you can prove it other than reading between the lines of Volleytalk and a mom's comment I'll listen. I hope she can help CSU. Deduct away

As usual, way more to the story. First of all, Volley tx is in the wrong in his assertion there was a plan and his "doubting" in regards to a scholarship being in jeopardy is inaccurate. This is a win, win, win for all three parties. This situation is a function of many things, early commitments to raw players, player being a better fit in another program, also player not holding up some of their end of the bargain. These things happen and unfortunately the perception is not alway positive for the program, and coaches are not in the position to defend or address the rumors. Kentucky is a good example in regards to having some player transfers. On the surface people raise an eyebrow, but in examing each case, everything was above board and all parties benefit.
