it was lame the last time they had it there, one of the least fun places to visit. What is there to see in Dallas?

Museums? We're talking about the nightlife options for the coaches and officials! I do agree that Dallas is limited with it's nightlife after 5:00pm as well as dining options but I did hear that they re-did their convention center so that should make it a better event overall.

Well, Salt Lake City is not much better than Dallas.
There's actually a good number of cool restaurants downtown...one of the top 25 in the world allegedly is J. Pyles. Unfortunate name, but having been there, I would agree that it is fantastic.
Given that Chicago's represents the next US bid for the summer Olympics, I wonder why future JO's wouldn't migrate there before the IOC decision.

It's too expensive to host JO's in Chicago, it's a union-city so holding tournaments there can get pricey. Additionally, most of the cities that host JOs are in a position where they really need the business and can offer cut-rates to everyone.

What's wrong with Unions ? Without them we could be like China where they pay their factory workers $40 a month. "Pricey" may mean less profit for USA Volleyball I suppose. Hardly a compelling reason for a "not for profit" enterprise. And who is to judge which cities need more JO business than others ? All I am saying is that it seems odd that the US Olympic developmental programs are not in synch with US efforts to win the IOC bid for hosting the summer games.

Last time I checked the US had a HUGE trade deficit with China.

They most ASICS every year. However, none of the Region staff want it here because it's a big pain in the butt and the people who have to do all of the work are well over 100 years old. Those old folks say it's because of the Unions, but as I said, ASICS is held year in and year out, as well as Gay Games last year, and the cost affected no one.

What is the source of your information regarding Dallas being the site? I remember last year that rumors started flying about JOs being in Miami this year. I guess those rumors were close...both cities start with "M".

I guess those rumors were close...both cities start with "M". Dallas makes sense for one good reason....Cities that have a difficult time getting tourists to come there in the summer, LIKE DALLAS, will do anything to get an event like this....USA Volleyball demands an arm and both legs to get the event. The amount of freebies and subsidized costs that they ask for will only be given by a city that is hard up for tourists during one of the hottest weeks in the year.....Dallas, New Orleans, Atlants, SLC to name a few. Cities that have no trouble with their summer tourist population do NOT have to give away the moon to get events....Dallas would make sense! People LEAVE Dallas in the summer, they don't vacation there!

Unions drive up cost to the consumer, ultimately. USA volleyball negociates VERY low room rates for their championships (adult & junior), usually around $99-$109. Hotels in Chicago would a grain of salt would never drop their rates that low when they can EASILY get double for another convention or event. Chicago in the summer does NOT struggle for convention business compared to cities like Dallas, Phoenix, and Salt Lake City just to name a few.
And you're wrong about the Great Lakes region not wanting "to do the work" to host Nationals because they're all "100 years old". Usually, the region has very little to do with hosting the event...it's usually run through a local organizing committee which is most often the convention and visitor's bureau or some type of sports authority. They plan and run the even along with the events staff at the USA volleyball national office.
