Lang Ping has no choice but to take Anderson. Most of the veteran player don't want to play for Ping!
Most? As mentioned, I think Berg is the only one who "might" fit that category. (although, I have no idea why she quit the national team)
I can't think of one veteran player that is not on the roster.... but could be. Tom quit before Ping was even coaching. Metcalf, Scott, haneef, ah mow are all back.... they are the veterans.
This is pretty much the same team with the same starters we have had the last couple years...strong but aging MBs, OHs that cannot pass or terminate, and fast tempo OPP in a slow tempo team. I hope that a few of the collegiate players consider redshirting next year and making a strong push to make the team - namely Barboza, Larson and Akinradewo. Hunter has been with the team for what two years now? She must be making some decent progress and will hopefully be an adequate back up to Ah Moh. Also...I am curious as well to whether Haneef married a Korean.

Well, the returning veteran players "tolerate" Ping to a certain degree knwoing well that 2008 (after the Olympics) might be her last year with the national team.

What is it about Ping to which they object?
She wants everyone on the team to be on a first name basis, but everyone is so confused by what to call her -- Jenny? Lang? Ping? Jenny-Ping? Jenny-Lang? -- that it is bringing down troop morale. I just wish those liberals in the USAV bureaucracy would understand that the National Team is no place for their politically correct social experimentation!

Wherever sport plays a big part in people's lives you can be sure they're bored witless and just waiting to break up the furniture." --Dr. Julia Goodwin, in "Kingdom Come" by J.G. Ballard

The comment was SO ridiculous that I thought you were kidding. If this is actually the way they felt then I think the problem is with the players and not with the coach. Lang Ping has been coaching the same way all around the world, in China and in Italy so if this the the crux of their beef with her then they need to grow up.
i don't see the veterans helping out much at all. the AARP middles and the ineffectual outsides are a result of the present system of training these player receive. I think the roadmap to identifying talent is pretty good but I don't think the training has helped all that much. This goes back to Toshi, and Mick, and in a way to Liskeyavich too.
As to Hunter being able to take over for Ah Mow, I just don't see it. She was a great collegiate setter but that does not translate immediately to the international game, if at all. She seems too robot like, to mechanical. The international game is much more fluid and slick, the changes in direction are sudden and quick. In addition, the setter has to be smart and take charge in a match, most American college setters aren't up to it, not because they are incapable, but because they have been brought up in a college system that is completely coach centered, they have never been taught to run the offense on their own.
Engineering is my vocation, volleyball is my obsession.

I hope that Murrey will receive good training I hope that she will not end up like Kristi Porter,Elaine Youngs, or Tee Williams, or Ogonna, great attacking without passing.
While I agree that Porter, Youngs, or Nnamani couldn't pass Grandma on the freeway from the fast lane, Teee Williams was actually a very good ball-control player. Her problem was she only knew how to hit the ball really hard into double-blocks all the time.
What happened to that other libero who was Davis's backup for a few years? Has Candace Lee beaten her for that other defensive spot? I remember she was good. She was used to pass for Haneef in crucial situations. I just can't remember her name. I'll look it up.

Sarah Drury is the name. Don't know what happened to her...

I can't believe you put someone like Tee Williams, who was a great all around player with the likes of mediocre players like Nnamani, Porter, and Youngs.

Yeah, Sarah Drury! I saw her play in the Grand Prix and Volley Masters a few seasons back, and thought she was pretty consistent. When she was subbed in, she usually took most of the serves and was very good. I remember the commentator saying that the Davis-Drury combo was brilliant. I've only seen Lee play in two matches since she joined the national team, but I didn't think she was that steady. But she's good too, and I'm glad she joined the national team.
Katie Wilkins just doesn't do it for me. During some of the exhibition matches against Poland she was passing horribly and her attacking and blocking weren't making up for her poor back court play. It will be interesting to see if Charnette Fair and Norisha Campbell can have an impact, as Danielle Scott is on her way out sooner or later. Nnamani, Glass, Olsovsky, and Busse may have been NCAA All Americans, but all lack legitmate international playing time. The quest for the OH that can pass and terminate the ball continues.
