Here's what I don't understand: why aren't more top West Coast recruits interested in Hawaii? It's not that far or that expensive from there. Too much been there, done that? As for Murrey, Hawaii wouldn't be so attractive. Hawaii already has 2 6'3" MB's who have 3 years remaining in their eligibility, Nickie Thomas and Amanda Simmons, both are highly regarded. Then, front runner Amber Kaufman who, to me, is potential all-american. She has 2 more years.

She wouldn't be competing with any middles, although she had played some middle in HS. Wow, you know recruiting times are tough when you see someone trying to use Oakland as a draw. I'm not trying to "use Oakland as a draw", but I checked this thread again and saw something about ice cream. Fentons Creamery brings fond memories from my youth (alas my favorite the Parfait is no longer on the menu). Piedmont Ave is an upscale neighborhood, and Fentons does attract its fair share of Cal students.

Thanks, BC, I don't know why I thought she was MB. I did read the article saying she was OH.

McNeal is slated as MB. Also, Mueller can see time at libero. Even if they are crowded, the competition would be exciting and most likely, Murrey is in the mix as a starter. Ahh, this post led me to think that way. I read it out of context.

(1) That kid staring at the ice cream sundae looks possessed in a Children of the Corn kind of way. (2) Might be because depending on where you put the break, it could be Fenton Screamery. Thanks, BC, I don't know why I thought she was MB. I did read the article saying she was OH. She's been a leftside since she was shorter than me. I saw her play middle once when her team was struggling mightily with the block. She was easily the biggest player with the most powerful attack, biggest block, and best back-row skills on her team. I have no doubt that she could be a successful middle at the highest level if she had to. Oh - I also went to Fentons today after dinner with the GF. I'm feeling a bit full right about now. ;D

Although top kids from out west have traditionally stayed west, I think Murrey is a great fit at Nebraska. She is a pretty down to earth kid, I think pretty similar to the Husker make-up of players.

Here's a couple of photos of Ms. Murrey being recruited:

Murrey played middle in club when she was a 7th grader for Golden Bear 14-1. At that time, she was already taller than Bear Clause. She was also very well coordinated, one of the rare bigger players who didn't go through a "grow into the body" stage. I remember talking to her father a bit at the "Kickoff" tournament that year and his telling me that her "mother" was the real athlete in the family. I later learned that Doug was Doug Murrey who was a star player at San Jose State and had once been drafted by the Warriors.
Amanda Gil played for Vision 14-1 that year and was just learning the sport so spent a fair amount of the year learning and watching during matches. One of my first long volleyball posts was about having to stand behind parents of really really tall seventh graders and not being able to see the match, but being able to see the future. Gil's father also plays a "sport", but despite appearances it's not basketball, it's poker.
Anyone who saw this years JO 18's final would understand why Kelly Murphy was identified as this year's #1 recruit. Given all that had been said about Alex Klineman. Murphy outplayed her in that particular match and I'm not sure it was that close. Klineman actually had a very good match btw. I just don't think there are many prospective setters who are versatile enough to get 30+ kills in the JO final.
