In looking at the passing stats I am surprised that they were able to pull this one out. The Greece team had better passing percentages. Four passers with each person having no less than 57% efficiency. USA had three primary passers with no more than 42% passing effeciency.
For USA - Sullivan 9/26 - 34% eff Priddy 17/40 - 42% eff Barnett 9/27 - 33% eff
For Greece (by their uniform numbers)- #1 - 10/17 - 58% #2 - 16/28 - 57% #7 - 20/35 - 57% #18 - 16/23 - 69%
Greece also out did us in the dig category as well (dug a ball with a successful attack) Greece 16 - USA 7
It will be interesting to watch the match. We must have been able to convert without the best passing.
Great job USA!!!!

I don't care who played ... I'm just glad they won (as I'm sure Ball is also)!

Can't wait to see the match televised either. I wanna see Ball pout when he gets yanked for Suxho.
LOL. Just kidding.

I like the sub pattern if it remains with Ball as the serving specialist. His serve is probably the only part of his game that has shown any kind of development over the last decade. I'm a Suxho fan. He is a true competitor and if you have ever met him, a truly humble man. I was also a Chip McCaw fan, Taliafero fan, and anybody elses fan that was trying to bump Ball out of that spot.

Let's give LB some credit. Down 10-12 in the 5th and having been pulled for Suxho, he could have been less than stellar from the service line.
Looks like he got the job done.
Lloy is a great setter. But, boy, his Olympics have not been good. Not Mike Lambert-awful, but not good.
Personally, I'd like to see the guy do something great before this is all over.

"Could have been less than stellar..." If he is the leader on this team and supposedly so much more mature than previous Olympics then he is expected and should expect of himself to perform at his highest level regardless of the situation or circumstance. Perhaps I was a little too harsh before about LB and I do see his value to this squad , but the future of this program will be riding on Suxho. Suxho is a volleyball player, LB is a setter and not a very good one at that. Suxho has the ability to make those around him look really good and not care how he looks. I've never really cared for LB's "look at me" persona. He's been watching too much of the NFL and NBA. Don't be surprised if he pulls out a Sharpie and signs the ball if he gets a block.

Here's the match statistics: www.fivb.org/vis_web/volley/mog2004/pdf/match033.pdfNotes: -looks like neither team did much dialing of their rotations in any game - which pretty much meant the same net matchups the entire match. USA starts either R6 receive or R1 serve to make Ball their first server, exception was the last game when they started R2 (can't tell if it was serve or receive). Greece pretty much started in R1 receive or R2 serve. -Barnett had a career match. He's been getting better every match thus far in the Olympics. Looks like USA has finally settled on the Priddy/Barnett combo at the OH positions. -Glad to see the USA is diversifying the offense better. The line on scouting the USA was always to load up on Stanley. -Some people wondered why Beal would sub Billings for Stanley in the frontrow. It may be the case where, statistically, Stanley is actually more effective hitting the D than he is hitting the 5 or the Red. So to give Stanley a breather, it does make sense to sub him in his least effective rotations, then have him fresh to sub in and serve - given that he is by far the best jumpserver on the team. Having watched the team play live, I'd say that Stanley looks more comfortable swooping and broadjumping from the D than he does hitting rightside frontrow. The way the balls are set, he's attacking from about the same point in the air on both frontrow and backrow attacks, anyway. But he seems to have better vision and reads the block better while broadjumping out of the backrow.

Wow, that will teach me to write them off. I gave up on them down 19-11 in the 4th. I went and did other things. I came back to see this thread at 4 pages and thought, what the heck could've happened. Wow. I cannot wait to see this one. The Greek crowd must be so deflated.
FWIW, I thought Suxho looked really good against Brazil, even if it was their scrub team, and he should've been playing much more. Ball wasn't getting it done when I saw him in earlier matches, he seemed too predictable.

I think I found a my long-lost volleyball twin! LOL. Suxho's a good athlete, and a gamer. It pains me to watch him set, though, from a technical standpoint. I've watched him since he was a freshman at USC in '97, when he used to set with only 6 fingers (he'd curl up the ringfinger and pinkie on both hands) and used to lean so far back as he got ready to backset the ball, that I think even some of my frosh/soph girls that I used to coach could have made the early read on him. LOL. That line about pulling out the Sharpie and signing the ball is classic, though.....HEHEHEHEHEHEHE

Priddy had the first serve in game 5. How can you tell? The stat sheet shows starting court position, not serving order.
