Oh obvisously the ROY and POY are going to come from the MPSF? No chance Matthews or Macias have at ROY? Yeah Matthews could have a chance at ROY.......... if he was any good.

Player of the year will be Sean Rooney hands down (Patak's a sophomore and will win it once (twice?) before his time is through...
Newcomer of the year will be Winder, he's a stud on a stud team... he's going to be VERY good...
Coach of the year will go to Shane Davis at Loyola... write that down, cause it's gonna happen... he deserves it.

I agree with Tigfan...although I don't think it's as hands down as you do but I'm thinking Rooney will get it. Winder is doing great with his team.

It is too bad that these awards have become so political. POW is another. Meerstein is "the other PSU MB." In the last week he had 51 kills (>.600), 15BA and 3BS...but will probably be overlooked again. No matter how great he performs week after week, as "the other middle" his name is hardly even known. If you compare Kowal's and Meerstein's season stats, Meerstein is as good if not better than Kowal... Yes that might not translate to a Player of the Week Award, BUT one would think that Meerstein deserves serious consideration for AVCA All-American... especially if Kowal wins.

There has been 2 equally good middles on PSU for the last 6-7 years, but for some reason or another 1 always overshadows the other.

Rooney will probably win because it his senior year and a lot of times POY goes to players like him in his senior year. Patak is a strong candidate also...UCSB would not be in good shape without him. He just goes and goes and goes. When Shane Davis took the job at Loyola everyone knew that it would be a challenge for him. I'm glad that he has succeeded so far.

who is Winder and what team does he play for? also, are these awards supposed to be based on how the person plays and what sort of an impact they make for their team or just solely on stats alone?

That is the question FtL.....
Because it seems to me on stats alone that Winder isn't a shoe in. Macias is in the top 5 in KPG and 8 in PPG. Matthews is 5 in APG. Winder is 2 in APG. I have not seen Winder play but it would seem to me that you could have just about anyone throwing up sets to Rooney and Co. and wouldn't be much lower.
In terms of what they mean to their team...
Pepp still has a very good setter that would have ran the team just as well. OSU has two other setters that would probably do a decent job and Findlay would have finished 8th in the conference without Macias and even that would be a question mark beating Clarke. Macias has helped put Findlay on the map beating some big schools and the future looks bright for that program with only two seniors.

Macias has had a pretty good year, and I think he is a strong candidate for MIVA rookie of the year, but here is where the politics come in.
Bottom line Findlay doesn't have the profile you need to get that kind of recognition for a first year guy. It might not be fair, but that's the way it goes.

What about Penn State's Gary Vogel for ROY? He already set the PSU rally-scoring record for digs.

Must be some record considering Vogel is 18th in the nation in digs per game...

I think Vogel has a chance for ROY, but only if PSU gets the two wins at the FF.

What about Penn State's Gary Vogel for ROY? He already set the PSU rally-scoring record for digs. That is the one skill/record where he does have a chance at beating the sideout record-digs of 297 (Pierce) at PSU. One player playing defense %95 of the time in every game is a pretty good advantage. Hard number to catch as it is high but he could do it. O'dell won't break all-time or season records as they have given the back-up setter a heck of lot of playing time.....which is smart actually.
