First of all, it's a mean joke. I am sure it was about Bristol and not Willow, but it's still mean. I get that.
But what the hell is Palin doing now? By continuing to go on TV shows and blasting Letterman, I can draw no other conclusion than that she is using the incident for political traction. By continuing to go on TV and claiming the joke was about _Willow and statutory rape_, she is also putting the focus on her 14-year-old daughter. This is Sarah Palin's choice.
All I can say is that I am glad she is not my mother.

She has her eye on 2012. She is pretty obnoxious and I am real happy she is not my mother. OTOH she may be Ali Daley's MOM.

By attempting to be the party of "traditional family values" the Republicans open themselves up to ridicule along these lines. But that's not the most interesting part of this story.
What I don't understand is why the Letterman jokes were not just ignored. If they had been, they would have been forgotten by now even by the people who saw them. And the people like me, who didn't see them, would have never heard of them. Instead, it ends up being Palin who looks bad, severely over-reacting.
What would she do if she actually were VP? Could she have handled the kind of stuff that was said about Cheney or Gore or Quayle? Doesn't look like it. (OTOH, so far Biden seems to have dropped entirely off the radar. )

I read that palin is saying that Letterman should apologize to all women. I thought for quite a while that that is what palin should be doing.

It does show, however, that making jokes about the kids of politicians is a bit of a third rail. They are generally considered out of bounds until and unless they start making public media appearances. In this case the problem was that Bristol Palin is pretty much "in bounds" as far as that goes, but Willow Palin is not. Whoever wrote that joke (which was more about A-Rod than anybody else, from a New York perspective) probably didn't realize that only Willow was on the trip. Big error.
But Palin's overreaction was also a big error.

Hey, are all you dumb hens posting this drama gossip while you are all getting your hair and nails done at the salon? Nice of you to take a break from watching Jerry Springer to join us doofs here at Volleytalk. Better hurry back though. I hear the gun-totin' bimbo, "First Dood", and the rest of the trailer trash gang are gonna be on soon. Cheers, The Blob

Ruffda, Thats a great opinion piece. The one counter point I would make, is where in the history of motherhood have we seen anything that would lead us to expect restraint in defense of their child? Did she go too far? Sure but why would anyone expect anything different? Palin isn't going anywhere. At this point I think she has to be the favorite to be our first female president, not in 2012, but probably in 2020. Last, I'd have like to have seen CBS give Letterman a week off and if he wasn't dogfighting Conan right now I'd like to think that they might have.

Palin isn't going anywhere. That's about right. She is going to be stuck in Alaska unless she agrees to the GOP rules and don a Playboy bunny outfit and serve drinks at the Rush Limbaugh inauguration.
