Thank you guys!
He usually corrects Jim when he screws up a player's name, and I really miss him. He is such a good sports commentator for UH Wahine Volleyball!

this hiring must be some kind of "volunteer" position or some temporary hire. It is unusal for a program like Stanford to hire someone who have been a high school coach/athletic director/sports announcer to be part of their full-time staff. Or is it?? It is not like Chris is some kind of volleyball genius that everyone is going after. I know this is a great oppportunity for him to spend some time with his son Spencer but there has to be more than that. Maybe getting Chris on the staff will help Stanford land those hot shot Punahou kids that seem to be leaning toward USC.
When I first heard that Chris was going to help coach Stanford's mens team my first reaction was, "why?" There are tons of other up and coming assistants that will jump at the chance.
Punahou----> Chris Machlalin---> Stanford--->make sense.

I guess what he had going for him is that most of the coaches that would be qualified also probably have jobs.

I believe the assistants left thus creating a vacancy that had to be filled quickly. He was available to help the staff so he took the opportunity to help them. What a way to go back to your alma mater and help out the team and maybe bring them a national title. Chris is a great commentator and will definitely miss him on the air. He will definitely help the team because he is such a great coach and he does wonders with his players. Look at what he has done at Punahou as a coach in both volleyball and basketball! Also, what a treat to be able to coach your son in collegiate athletics as well as all the local talent from Hawaii. Stanford Cardinals 2010 Men's Volleyball Champions!!!!!!!!

I think the job is just for the fall, he should be back doing the mens volleyball broadcasts in the spring.
One bit of trivia McLachlin was also Barack Obama's high school basketball coach.

Eh Lyke Poke, you're not confused. Chris was considered in 1975 for the job when Alan Kang was leaving. Chris' wife Beth was on the team. It was only a part-time position. Shoji ended up being hired.

Hmmmm...that is a interesting situation. If he is only there for the fall then this is more like a consulting position like Carl McGowan had with Mike Wilton. If he was going to be on the actual staff of John Kosty he would be there for the entire spring because men's volleyball season doesn't start until the new year. Right now most men's VB teams are participating only in informal workouts. I don't think you can game plan or do team stuff yet. If Chris is up there now and coming back in the spring then are you really consider a coach of the team?? There is really nothing Chris can do at this time other than watch the team scrimmage, recruit and hold coaches meetings.

Article says McLachlin has joined as an assistant and that Al Rodriguez has moved to Director of Operations. Therefor if he is an assistant he would be there fall and spring. Mr. Rodriguez, I believe, had medical difficulties last year, and please forgive me if I have that wrong, and may not want to stay on full time as an assistant, or whatever. Maybe Dave Shoji will take a short leave of absence to come over and help coach his sons this spring.
