One bit of trivia McLachlin was also Barack Obama's high school basketball coach. That team got on my nerves -- Hilo would win on day one, get matched with Punahou and lose to Barry's team (that's the name he went by back then) in the second round. Happened two years in a row. Bonus trivia: When Chris was a senior at Punahou his hoops team mate was the Hawaii/Michigan State football legend Charlie Wedemeyer. Hilo took care of them in the state basketball final that year :-)

this hiring must be some kind of "volunteer" position or some temporary hire. It is unusal for a program like Stanford to hire someone who have been a high school coach/athletic director/sports announcer to be part of their full-time staff. Or is it?? It is not like Chris is some kind of volleyball genius that everyone is going after. I know this is a great oppportunity for him to spend some time with his son Spencer but there has to be more than that. Maybe getting Chris on the staff will help Stanford land those hot shot Punahou kids that seem to be leaning toward USC. When I first heard that Chris was going to help coach Stanford's mens team my first reaction was, "why?" There are tons of other up and coming assistants that will jump at the chance. Punahou----> Chris Machlalin---> Stanford--->make sense. I hope you're new to volleyball, because Chris McLaughlin is one of the most well respected volleyball personalities in the islands...he has won numerous state titles in volleyball and even basketball...he has sent numerous high school kids off to a successful career in college.. For Hawai`i he is a volleyball genius and maybe not at the college level yet, but definitely at the high school level here in Hawai`i he is...I honestly think that he'll be a good edition to the Stanford team...his knowledge of volleyball is huge!

No I am not new to volleyball. I played the sport in high school and is a longtime UH volleyball supporter. I know Chris knows the sport..is a great guy...and all that but I was curious about the hiring because he was 'retired" from coaching when he was asked to join the staff. He hasn't coached at the collegiate level for a long time and as someone mentioned , he is just a year removed from a stroke. I love Chris as a color guy for UH Volleyball and is certainly not dissing the guy. Just a unusal hire..thats all I'm saying.

He is a very good coach - I played for both him and Dave S. - he is definitely qualified.
Bonus Trivia: in 1972 Punahou won the first of many State titles under Chris M. - defeating Hilo ;D at War Memorial on Maui

Because Chris has the credentials, and the experience. So what is so unusual about that?

Sorry I didn't mean to attack you, if it came out that way...it really doesn't mean much that he was retired from coaching because lots of people come out of retirement for many reasons...especially when you are passionate and still have the love for what you are doing... And yes he jus had a stroke, but he looks strong and I don't think a person like him would let that hold him back from doing something like this... I don't get why you think it's an unusual hire...for one his son currently is playing for Stanford, he is an alumni of Stanford, he has all the right credentials, so I jus don't see why it's that unusual...

This is probably a recruiting hire. Chris knows who can play and who can't play in hawaii and that's where Stanford men's team recruits.

Kolo..no need to apologize...I did not think you were attacking me. Wiz and Kolo...I thought it was unusual because it didn't go thru the "normal" steps most coaches go thru. Like being a volunteer then an assistant then an assistant HC then HC. In other word, move up the coaching ladder.
You guys probably know Chris on a personal level and can vouch for his coaching skills. I don't know the man other than what I see on K5 and what I read in the paper. That could be why it is unusual for me and not to you guys.
Please note I didn't say this was a bad hire, just an unusual one. I mentioned that this is a good opportunity for him to spend time with Spencer and help coach a national level team but still a surprise hire to me.

I think it was a surprise to us all. Someone had mentioned that Chris will be Stanford's recruiting tool here in the islands if this turns out to be a permanent position, which I doubt. But that was when we were all going with the notion that he is just volunteering. I guess we'll have to wait and see!

Don't believe it's a recruiting hire. Chris told me it was to help out Stanford. Isn't one of their assistants ill and hasn't been in the office on a daily basis? He's a great motivator, has an amazing record at Punahou in both basketball and volleyball. an interesting side note. this is a long-standing agreement between Chris and his wife Beth. After they were married, she ended up playing for the national team. He agreed to it, saying that at some point he might want some time away to do something. Believe this is the time.

I think architecting the greatest boys' high school volleyball program in history makes Chris highly qualified to coach at any level.

It may not be a recruiting hire persay, but it's definitely going to help Stanford recruiting in Hawai`i...with McLaughlin at Stanford, there's a good chance that will draw lots of local boys to Stanford, because of the reputation McLaughlin has in the islands... So in actuality it might work out as a recruiting hire.

That's cool, I fully understand where you are coming from! And no I honestly don't know McLaughlin personally, I'm jus deeply involved in the volleyball community and jus heard so much good things about McLaughlin from people that know him and that has played for him...I honestly haven't heard a single bad thing about him...so I jus know he is a really reputable person and well-liked and knowledgable in this sport, considering his accomplishments and achievements!

Chris addressed this a little in his last broadcast a couple weeks ago. He mentioned that there was a last minute opening, and the Stanford coaching staff asked him to fill it. He said he was basically going up there to help out in whatever way he can, to fill whatever need they had. It didn't sound like it was something all that planned out. More a spontaneous thing.
Given the timing of it all, it sorta makes sense...
