I don't see anyone criticizing D2 and D3 teams for talking trash or comparing rankings. Last year, both Oshkosh and MU had more talent than a lot of those varsity teams. That is without recruiting (in most cases) and scholarship. I apologize. I saw this was a battle of #1 vs. #2 and was just trying to figure out what sort of traveling medicine show rankings you people were using. Get back to me though, and let me know who wins this clash in the volleyball equivalent of the wheelchair olympics.

Everybody checking out this thread please do us all a huge favor and have some scruples to ignore this idiot....he obviously only posts to redirect the attention so he can do some one-handed net surfing (if u catch the drift)....Just post ur thoughts on the match and don't encourage Derailer....hey prolly's a few chain links short of a first down anyways!

This Derailer guy is a regular dumbass..........If you would have been at this match, you would have seen most likely some of the best men's volleyball you've seen in a long ass time. Just because we're a club sport and YOU dont understand our ranking system doesn't mean you can get on here and criticize us for it.
And what's sad is that if you'd actually watch a decent match of club ball, you might actually pick up a few pointers which might even move you a seat up on that warm bench....and that much closer to the scorers table.

If you would have been at this match, you would have seen most likely some of the best men's volleyball you've seen in a long ass time. I doubt that. You guys need to relax. There's nothing wrong with being the 50th best. As far as me and playing time, a few internet searches should be able to kick up all sorts of good stuff about me.

There's no need to calm anyone down here but yourself.......I'm quite sure that surfing the net for info on you would take a few seconds but we're talking about volleyball here..........As far as surfing the web for volleyball info, there's plenty out there on any good club ball player, especially in the Midwest.

When the men's volleyball teams from Marquette University and the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh faced off Thursday (Feb. 9), it really was a clash of warriors and titans. With close to 200 people packed onto Court 5 of the Rec Center, you would have thought this was the WVC, MIVA or NIRSA championship -- but in early February?
You bet.
In one of the best regular season matches in WVC history, MU broke out to a two games to nothing lead. But after the Titans changed up their line-up to put a bigger block on Marquette's outside hitters Ryan Biros and Tom Liszka, Oshkosh pulled even, 2-2. In game 5, Marquette took the side change at 8-7, but two serving errors doomed the Golden Eagles.--MU's website story

Interesting! Great to hear about the crowd, also. The Big Ten has their full round robin of play this weekend at Purdue. That'll give a clue as to who's who in that conference. Edit to add a link to early action out west: www.nccvl.info/Looks as though Fresno State is back strong this year.

now that #1 and #2 have played each other for the first time with five more times probably on the way, have any of the west-coast teams played each other?

Some of the nccvl have played each other - latest scores not on the nccvl info link...home school inputs scores; visiting team has to confirm before the scores show. Takes forever!! Next weekend is Far Westerns at Davis.. lotsa comparisons possible after that. I am hoping some midwest/socal teams might come too. Haven't seen the lineup yet. Nothing on UCD website as to teams.
Cal hasn't seen Sac State or Fresno or Chico St yet. We saw Sac on adjacent court in early Dec.,(can't remember if we actually played them)...and Fresno hasn't come to anything up this way yet.
All league teams play each other Mar 4,5 at Santa Clara and the next weekend is the Great Western Shootout at Berkeley, so by mid March we should have a far more accurate idea of who is strong, which teams are sorta equal...and which teams are struggling this year. With so many new players this year, nobody knows till everyone has played everyone else at least once. Most of us are walking around with question marks on our faces. Strength will depend on whose freshman/sophs newly on the floor are improving the fastest, I guess. Other teams have some veterans. Several new coaches all around makes for longer 'figure things out' season.
Cal has Alumni Match tonite (30 due to show)...lotsa short score games with mixed teams and then the traditional bragging rights for the year from the match later in the eve between 'young/best alums' and current starters....1998 squad also showing up somewhat complete for lst time, except for the two still playing pro vball in Sweden (Aparicio and Russell), so the '98ers are going to see if they still have some game. Lotsa eye rollin' going on among alums and current team. Young alums win every other year or so....we have 6 flying in from the midwest.... (last year's coach Gernot Hupfauf even flew in from Innsbruck Austria and walked in at last nite's match...he is really here for his wedding next weekend in Sacto....).
What the west has is still anybody's guess...

Story posted on Oshkosh's website:
#2 Oshkosh Knocks Off #1 Marquette (02-10-06) In a battle of the two top teams in NIRSA Division I, UW-Oshkosh outlasted Marquette University 24-30, 23-20, 30-27, 30-24,15-13 in a match held Thursday (Feb. 9) in Milwaukee. The Golden Eagles, the defending national champions entered the match as the nation's top ranked team and the Titans, last year's national runner-ups as the second ranked team in the latest poll.
In front of a standing room only crowd, UW-Oshkosh and Marquette University battled for nine ties in the first game before the hosts built a 24-20 lead. The Titans could get no closer as nine missed serves and three receiving errors plagued their comeback attempts. Despite slamming down 17 kills in the first game UW-Oshkosh could only manage a .235 hitting percentage.
The Golden Eagles built a 2-0 game advantage as the Titans mustered only 13 kills in the second game. UW-Oshkosh only had two missed serves in the stanza but inconsistent passing led to a predictable offense in the defeat.
A line-up change helped the Titans gain momentum as they squeaked out a close third game win. Tied at 24-24, UW-Oshkosh received two straight kills from Jeff Thomas (Sr. - Madison) and a serving ace from James Bradley (So. - Racine) to pull out to a 27-24 advantage. The Golden Eagles pulled to within 27-26 before two kills by Mike Semrad (Sr. - Waukesha) gave the Titans game point. A side-out by Marquette University gave the hosts hope before a missed serve gave the game to UW-Oshkosh.
The Titans had 20 kills in the game led by five by Matt Lewin (Sr. - Cudahy) and four by Semrad and Bradley. UW-Oshkosh also scooped us ten digs and added four blocks as a team.
Game four was tight to start before UW-Oshkosh forged ahead 14-10 and 20-16. Marquette University pulled to within 20-19 before UW-Oshkosh went on a 4-0 run to take a five-point advantage. The two combatants traded points for eight serves before the Titans held on to even the match at 2-2. Thomas led the Titans in the fourth game with five kills and Nathan Malewiski (Jr. - New Franken) added four.
After a kill by Semrad started game five, Andrew Sederberg (Sr. - Racine) recorded his first service ace of the match to give the Titans a 2-0 lead. After a side-out by the Golden Eagles, UW-Oshkosh got another kill by Semrad and eventually went up 5-3. A hitting error by the Titans gave the Golden Eagles another point and after a 4-2 run held an 8-7 lead at the side change.
After a kill by Lewin evened the score at 8-8, Brandon Kirkland (Sr. - Racine) followed that by delivering a service ace for a 9-8 advantage for the Titans. A hitting error by Marquette University gave a two-point cushion to UW-Oshkosh. After a side out by the hosts, they knotted the score at 10-10. Lewin answered with another kill and Bradley recorded the Titans third service ace of the game to give the Titans a 12-10 lead.
Marquette University responded by siding out before a kill by Andrew Sederberg gave UW-Oshkosh another two-point lead at 13-11. Again the Golden Eagles sided out and then scored another point to even the score at 13-13. From that point, Lewin recorded his 14th kill of the match to give the Titans a match point opportunity at 14-13. After a clutch dig by Nathan Sederberg (So. - Racine), his brother Andrew set Malewiski who squeezed out a kill between two Golden Eagles' blockers for the win.
Thomas led the Titans with 17 kills, followed by Semrad with 15 and Lewin with 14 putdowns. Bradley ended the match with nine kills and Nathan Sederberg and Malewiski, who came off the bench after the second game, each had eight kills as the team finished with 74 on the night.
Aaron Wayne (So. - New Berlin) ended the match with 15 digs and Thomas had 11 and the both Nathan and Andrew Sederberg had six each. Lewin and Semrad recorded seven blocks each and Kirkland finished the night with four service aces.

I am glad to hear that Mike Semrad is dominating some volley... He played at IPFW for a year, and is a really good guy. 6'10" lefty middle, definitely a tricky guy to block! Haven't seen him in a few though...

Big Ten round robin:
Michigan State and Illinois dominated. Both went into their final match undefeated, where MSU beat Illinois in three. Two strong teams!
Ohio State and Minnesota ended up with three losses each.

Don't you folks think its time for these schools to move these teams to the varsity level. They are some of the best schools in the nation with some of the best kids in the nation, not playing varsity ball. Its great for the club ranks but what about the coolegiate game its self? We need you guys in the mid west to help push this matter. Help us on the east coast propell the sport further. Help us bring this great sport back to where it belongs. Where you can say you played for a NCAA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP!

I agree in full.........the midwest has been booming with young talent in the last few years.......I think that mainly why some of these players aren't playing at the varsity level is because they couldn't afford to go to school there; not because they weren't good enough.....
I know a few of the Oshkosh players had chances to play varsity but passed it up for similar reasons(which is probrally why they have been a very successful club team in the last five years).
