If you read the above posts it says the won Big 10's this past weekend with an undefeated record, plus they have some varsity grad students who have strengthened the team.

Very good groupings of the teams. One that I recall that should probably be in the mix (possibly in tier two) is UW-Whitewater. They made a bit of noise at nationals last year and didn't lose anyone, I don't think. Some of the chees...Wisconsin people can clarify where they currently stand.

Whitewater has a kinda tricky offense and pretty scrappy D, but lack the middle blocking experience to keep up w/ the big boys.....also to their disadvantage is they have their best hitter having to set when in the back row instead of passing/swinging...but they can serve tough and team defense can take an undersized team pretty far.....especially in this so far powerhouseless year of NIRSA

So Oshkosh pretty much just man-handeled Marquette in a pretty quick 3-game match 2 weeks ago.......
What's happening to MU or what happened to Oshkosh? Does MU face early elimination in Salt Lake or is it just a slight funk that they're in?

im quite sure that the level of trash talking will hold up at nationals.......its a part of every athletes nature to do it.
the true test is going to be who's gonna be able to back it up and who's gonna have to run and hide from riddicule.......

I think anything that can be called trashtalk has been between teams within their own region...between people that actually know what the other teams have to offer. Select blanket statements have been made by some, but not even people out West seem to know what those teams have to offer. I think Nationals will be interesting this year because it's actually the Western teams that have something to prove. And, the cancelling of Great Western Shootout where you get an early indicator of how different regions match up leaves more questions unanswered before nationals. Maybe Vegas will help, but my understanding is that tournament has gotten worse over recent years.

The Great Western Shootout was cancelled because six teams droped out at the last minute and no one else wanted to replace them. As far as I know it was the teams from the mid-west that dropped out.
You're right, the west does have something to prove and as I've said on other posts, it are the freshman out west that have impressed me. I am a freshman myself, so don't know too much of what to expect from the mid-west. I'm not expecting Pepperdine caliber teams, but based on what i've heard, its the midwests height that is the huge advantage.
It will be very interesting to see how nationals pans out. If the west of midwest will show up strong.

Wow is someone full of themselves here !!! Where on the post before this did anyone mention anything about Derailer being a star or not give us your name DE and we will all search it out and learn about a STAR !! If you would have been at this match, you would have seen most likely some of the best men's volleyball you've seen in a long ass time. I doubt that. You guys need to relax. There's nothing wrong with being the 50th best. As far as me and playing time, a few internet searches should be able to kick up all sorts of good stuff about me.

Getting back to the entire point of this discussion, Marquette has lost to not only Oshkosh every time, but also has lost to Lakeland 4 out of 5 times(Lakeland#2 now) eventhough Lakeland lost their best middle, libero, and rightside last year ( Chris Gornik, Rocky, Jon Lewicki). Marquette is good, no doubt, but their lacking something? any ideas?

I think as someone stated a long time ago, a real go to guy or banger is what they need to be able to get back up there with the Oshkosh's and Lakelands. Someone to get them riled up and really loud. Right now they look relatively young and quiet, especially for them.

^They have 2. Tom and Ryan... their 2 outsides. But the setter can't seem to figure out that he doesn't need to distribute the sets equally. If the middles aren't putting a ball away, and the RSH is injured, just put the ball outside all day.
I'd say the biggest problem with MU is the constant linup changes. Because of injuries, no one can get comfortable with who is out on the court. Hopefully they get 6 or 7 fixed and start doing something.

yeah Tom has been switching right and outside throughout the year, but lately I think hes outside. They neve get really loud because Tom is a rather quiet guy.

Maybe another setter is needed then? Is there anyone who can set well otherwise on the team, who will feed the hot hand?
Was that old, really tall guy playing opposite any good, or is he just big? I saw him, Tom, and that middle in front, should be a good block.

The guy who stepped in to play opposite tried to make the switch from playing middle his whole life to rightside in 2 practices. Not a desirable switch to be making. His blocking is fine, but offense from him at a new position was almost non-existent. But, rightside is the biggest need and a legitimate answer hasn't been found yet.
As for finding another setter, I just think the decision making needs to be better at times. Last year, you couldn't argue that he made a bad setting decision because all the hitters were a good option every play. This year it's not the same, so he needs to make better decisions consistently in order for the team to win the tough matches. Overall, there is less margin for error for Marquette this year, so even if the setter is making all the right calls, it doesn't guarantee a win.
