www.nirsa.net/sc/vb/index.htm link to Club/Nationals homepage....scroll down to the rankings link.... as stated before ...these ranking make a bit more sense by late March....unless teams play each other ... somewhere .....or fly around/run around for interleague matches a lot. There are some bigger tourneys open to farther away teams coming up. After those, these rankings will be looking more authentic. Unfortunately travel costs for club teams make it right difficult to go far for interleague play but it is very much worth it when they can do it.

Aren't all the top teams out in California and Hawaii. I've heard BYU is supposed to be pretty good, too. Will the winner of the Marquette-Oshkosh clash make the NCAA tourney?

Will the winner of the Marquette-Oshkosh clash make the NCAA tourney? California teams, along with Hawaii, BYU, and teams like Penn State, Ohio State, etc, are all varsity programs. These are equal to any other national NCAA sport. These teams are all club teams, meaning they are not sponsered by the NCAA. They have their own tournaments, which someone else can explain because I am not familar with them.

Penn State, UCLA, and Ohio State also have club teams. Do players move from the club teams to the NCAA teams if needed? Are the club players known as those behind the "blue curtain" at UCLA? www.nirsa.net/sc/vb/2006/rankings_01_18.htm#M1

On occasion a club player might move to a varsity squad. But more likely, players that attend a school hoping to make varsity, but don't, will play on the club team. The club circuit has about 150 schools between their own Division I and II. It's all more informal than the couple of dozen D I varsity programs (plus, then, D II and D III). The divisions are set up differently between club and varsity, to add to the confusion.
Club teams maybe get some funding from their schools, but typically pay their own way. Each region of the country has their own set of conferences (the midwest, for example, has three). Tournaments are a mix of schools hosting tournaments for whomever chooses to attend as well as conference tournaments, regional tournaments, and then a national tournament in mid-April.
The west coast has tended to be strongest at the club level, just like for varsity. The reasons are the same - a lot of talent, and since the guys can't all play varsity, many trickle down to the club level (Arizona, Colorado, Cal, Sac State, UC-Davis, Utah State, etc. etc.). Last year, though, four midwest teams won the national quarterfinal matches, making it an all-midwest final four. Very rare - but a hint of ongoing midwest success?
How does club stack up against varsity? Club can't touch the top ten or fifteen varsity teams. But Cal-Berkeley has played Stanford in recent years and held their own. This fall, Illinois (#3 at nationals for the last few years) beat Quincy's varsity team and then lost to Loyola's subs.
Many of us have backgrounds or ties to the club circuit and enjoy it. It's competitive ball with a lot of former all-state players but it's fun, too. The players develop quite a strong sense of comraderie ...and competitiveness.

PS Club teams can have up to two former varsity players on their rosters ...and graduate students can play. Cal-Berkeley last year had a grad student, Al Glick (6'5" hitter out of Germany) who was just a stud. The former Pacific player, Gawlik, is now in grad school at Michigan State and playing for their club team.

Just to add to that, a varsity player cannot play club the same season as the varsity season. You also get 6 years of eligibility, which some teams really take full advantage of.

This is kinda funny...the 12th post or so and it will be the first about the topic ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) I would think Oshkosh would win but I don't expect it to be a sweep anytime soon. They just have more experience since its the same exact team as the past 2-3 years. Marquette is big though, if they can get touches and make their serves they should be able to hold their own. Also, if I was MU I would out their big OH at OPP for the match. That's just strategy though. Marquette started out kinda rough (for them) losing to Graceland (varsity) and an up and coming UIC team, but have definitely pulled it together since then. The MW10 will be a slugfest this year. There are definite favorites, but the top teams from last year have definitely made the others in the conference step it up and it showed in the pre-season. Looking forward to seeing some good ball on the 18th at NIU.

As far as touching top ten or fifteen....to say it can't be done is false....not sure how many opportunities good club teams get to play D1 teams, but this fall Loyola narrowly escaped Oshkosh (by the way a d3 teaching college in wisconsin) by 3 points in the first game and 2 points in the second of the Loyola/TPC fall tourney

Any club team wouldn't stand a chance against the top D1 varsity programs. Loyola didn't even have it's full squad. These teams practice every day, are well coached, and they are getting paid to go to school for a reason. Oshkosh doesn't even have a coach right now (that I'm aware of).
You, personally, would be too short to compete with most D1 middles, and lil Sederburg would also be a non factor on the outside. You didn't beat a varsity team... you ALMOST beat a varsity team. In fact, you didn't even take a game from them. I would bet you that they have forgotten the name "Oshkosh" altogether by now because to them you are just another club team they got to beat up on and gave their non-starters a chance to play.
I don't doubt you have a great team, but you are so full of it that it hurts my brain. I look forward to seeing the MU v. Oshkosh match and know very well that it will be the first of many matchups between the two teams. If you take a victory on thursday, you have earned your bragging rights. Until then, you'll have ALMOST beaten a varsity team, and be defending ALMOST national champions.
