www.avca.org/CollegiateDetail.asp?id=8743&catid=6George Mason Upsets Penn State 3-1 Patriots pull into tie in the loss column with Nittany Lions for first place in EIVA Tait Division 3/25/2006 -FAIRFAX, Va. – No. 15 George Mason (18-5, 7-1 EIVA Tait) avenged its only EIVA Tait Division loss of the season by beating first-place Penn State (13-7, 9-1 EIVA Tait) in four games on Saturday evening at John Linn Memorial Gym. With the win, the Patriots pull into a tie in the loss column with the Nittany Lions for first place in the division. After dropping a close first game by four points, 30-26, George Mason swept the next three games, winning by scores of 30-18, 30-22 and 30-21. In their prior meeting on Feb. 25 in University Park, Pa., Penn State defeated Mason in three games. In that meeting the Patriots hit only .200 as a team, while the Nittany Lions hit .394. The teams reversed roles in tonight’s meeting as the Patriots’ attack was on fire all night long, hitting .432, while the Nittany Lions’ hit .165 as a team. The Patriots hit .300 or better in all four games, posting hitting percentages of .519 in game one, .538 in game two, .318 in game three and .300 in game four. Redshirt senior opposite hitter Shaun Powell led the way with 17 kills on 31 attempts, while redshirt sophomore outside hitter Hudson Bates was second to Powell with 15 kills for the Patriots. While he didn’t finish in double-digits in kills, senior middle blocker Matt Steinfurth made the most of his attempts, finishing with eight kills on 11 attempts for a sizzling .727 hitting percentage. In addition to his work on the offensive end, Steinfurth, who leads all of NCAA Division I-II men’s volleyball in blocks per game, also anchored the Mason defense, finishing with five solo blocks and seven block assists. The Patriots finished with 15 blocks as a team, compared to eight for the Nittany Lions. The win is important for George Mason, not only in its quest for the EIVA Tait Division title, but also in terms of historical significance. The Patriots entered tonight’s matchup with a 12-79 record in the all-time series against the Nittany Lions, including the loss earlier in the season. Tonight’s win is only the third time George Mason has defeated Penn State since the 1992 season, and the first victory for George Mason against Penn State since the 2001 season, a year the Patriots finished 20-7 overall and saw head coach Fred Chao earn EIVA Coach of the Year honors. George Mason is back in action on April 1 against EIVA Tait Division rival St. Francis (Pa.) in Loretto, Pa. First serve is scheduled for 4 p.m. The Patriots have won their previous two meetings against the Red Flash this season, winning in three games each time. The trifecta would be complete if 24's former CTU director George Mason comes back from the dead and saves the day again.

Where's Aaron Smith? Smith did not travel with the team. Rumor says he's off the team

How funny would it be if Penn State hosts the Final Four, and they aren't even in it? Under normal conditions, out here in the MPSF, that happends all the time, but for Penn State, that would be very embarassing to not even come out of the EIVA. ;D ;D ;D

So all George mason needs to do is win the rest of their games to get home court advantage for the playoffs , then duplicate this weekends win to represent for the final four , CORRECT ?

PSU will still be fine, I do not see them losing another match to an EIVA team, so they will still host. Mason will have to play at a pretty high level to beat PSU in the finals.
Rumors (again this is a rumor I heard at the last game) is that Aaron Smith is off the team for the rest of the year. Some sort of violation of team rules while out in Cali. Heard he will have to meet with the coaches and captains of next years team to see if they want him back.
This is just a rumor at this point so take it for what it is worth.

Actually, it was a "team image" violation. (It will have to come from the USC guy involved.) PSU takes image very seriously. I wasn't on the bus, but I heard Coach Pavlik went nuts...worse the guys have ever seen. Current thinking is that Smith will be back this year.

He wasn't too concerned about his image when he went off on the up ref in the match against Mason. He argued a carry call and wouldn't shut up. He finally got carded and escorted off the court by the down ref. You could tell he was extremely frustrated. He even went off on his setter in another game.

But that makes sense. The coach should be able to go ballistic, keep the players behavior exemplary. I heard the same as eiva- Smith can return at a later date. And why not congratulate GMason? They played great, as did their bball team!

Mason is a lock for the EIVA bid after last week's slaughter in Fairfax. ;D ;D

Heinrich is correct. Head to head games is the first tie-breaker. That being said PSU still has the upper hand on hosting. But it would still be fun to see Penn St. go to Fairfax to win an EIVA title. I remember posting a few weeks back (maybe even a month or so) about how none of the Mason fans were doing their traditoinal "Mason will finally beat PSU" ranting over here on the east coast. Looks like zipped lips, that trip to the west coast and a few inspiring games won (against top notched teams, ranked) by their basketball team has ignited a fire under the GMU Men's Volleyball team also. I agree with BS what would happen if Mason is able to knock out PSU and keep them from being in the "Dance," in a year where they host it. Think Pavlik will let that happen (image??)? Hmmmmmm, good question who has the best answer? GMU or PSU.....to be concluded during the these last few matches and the EIVA Tournament.

I don't think PSU cares where they play the EIVAs, they just want to win it!

I'm sorry to say that I think Penn State will still pull out the EIVA AGAIN this year. It appears they will host the EIVA Finals based on the fact that they beat Mason in fewer games than Mason beat them, and it is unlikely either team will lose another match in EIVA play. My guess is that Penn State will MIRACULOUSLY get everyone healthy, and through any disciplinary suspensions just before the EIVA tournament, and they will be at full strength, which will be a confidence boost for them in the tournament. That confidence boost and hosting the tournament will be all they need to pull out another EIVA championship over a good Mason team. The pressure to finally beat Penn State when it counts in the EIVA tournament will be too great for Mason, and they won't pull it off. I don't say this because that is what I WANT to happen. I say it, because I'm being realistic and it's what I think will happen. UNFORTUNATELY! Then Penn State will show up at the Final Four, YET AGAIN, acting all cool, like they are suppose to be there! That is some SERIOUS B S.
