Pool Placements are now posted for this weekends MIVA club championships at Lakeland. www.miva-vball.org/files/schedule8.htmlAs I can recall, it's some kind of cross over b/w the first two pools for day 1....any thing worth noting from these pool listings?

I thought there were supposed to be like 30 or 31 teams playing? Does anyone know what happened to the others?

I'm not sure whats going on with the other teams....Northwestern and Ohio U look absent at 1st glance. Maybe for Ohio too much travel/money. At least the hotels are cheap in Sheboygan!
I think Pool C and Pool D just play each their own brackets througout the day. I could be totally wrong though. I know the pools are supposed to be arranged on conf. finish, but where did Cincinnati and Kentucky come from in their pools?

Last year had twenty nine teams, as I recall from a recent look back. The teams are seeded coming in - the top teams are in the first two pools. So it looks like #1 seed Oshkosh and #4 MSU are together, and #2 Lakeland and #3 Illinois (bumped above MSU due to recent win?) are together. The top two teams coming out of pool play on Saturday get a bye in the Sunday playoffs ...if they hold their position, those four would then meet in Sunday's semi-finals. But both of those top pools have some other potentially dangerous teams, so it'll be fun!

Star035, I'm not sure if you're right about how the pools are created (by pre-tournament seeding across the MIVA conferences). It probably all winds up the same anyway. But I thought it was more like this From Midwest Ten: Oshkosh 1st and Marquette 3rd From Big Ten: MSU 2nd and Ohio State 3rd From Great Midwest: Miami U 2nd and Cincinnati 3rd So then 1st and 3rd from Big Ten and Great Midwest are both is the other pool along with 2nd and 3rd from Midwest 10. Those finishes are based on the individual conference championship tournaments. Based on that, you wind up with two 3rd place teams from each conference...I don't know how they determine which goes to which pool if there is any logic to that part. As far as MIVA is concerned Illinois does move ahead MSU by winning the Big Ten championship.
Last year Pools A and B did not cross over. It was round robin within the pool, with the exception of playing the team from your same conference. So, Oshkosh will play MSU, Ohio St, Miami and Cincinnati but not Marquette. I have no idea what Pools C and D do.

I yield to the gentleman from Marquette! That all makes sense. Thanks for clarifying.

Michigan State beat Oshkosh 2-0 in the championships. Oshkosh lacked team chemistry from what I saw. Michigan State doesn't let anything get them down and there were very few point runs by Oshkosh.

Wow^^ Yeah Oshkosh looked puzzled when playing northern Ohio when they barely pulled that one out.
So What teams surprised people at the tourney this weekend. I personally was amazed by Noter dame, and Wisconsin. A couple other teams showed that they some good play also. Who won the silver bracket?

Interesting weekend to say the least. Just when I thought some of the top teams (LC, U of I) would round into form, or that I would be able to see a definite order of teams, it kind of gets thrown out the window. Big time congrats to MSU. Was seriously starting to wonder if/when someone would beat Oshkosh.
It just goes to show especially this year who comes to play harder at any given match can win. Even if you're supposedly outmatched. Notre Dame and Wisconsin definitely work well together, and overcame arguably more talented teams in the playoffs.

^^^yeah Lakeland was beaten by Wisconsin Madison because they were just hitting balls out and just not playing "volleyball". I was standing around and heard a couple of the Wisonsin guys state that "those guys are better than us, respect this win and them." too bad they lost right after LC. Illinois had trouble seeing as their middle Febreez.. wasnt there due to injury.

Not sure how to rank em all after this weekend. Maybe:
1 Arizona (beat MSU in Vegas) 2 MSU 3 Oshkosh 4 UCLA (good showing in Vegas) 5-7 Lakeland/Illinois/Notre Dame 8 Colorado 9 Maryland 10 Cal Poly/a top EIVA performer from the weekend
Arizona, MSU, and Oshkosh look like the teams to beat at nationals ...maybe UCLA, too.

I would agree with the top three, but since UWO only has one loss it is tough to knock them from the top two spots MSU is a legit 3 spot but I think UWO is still one of the top two teams. I would also like to give a lot of respect to MSU they gave Osh Kosh a great match and whatever they were doing with that doll in warm ups/time outs had everyone in the gym laughing. That care free mentality kept them loose all day on Sunday and they just kept rolling. Congrats MSU and good luck at nationals
