Duke hosted a nice little event. Good crowd for the last match, Delaware competed well against Minn, NC Central had #13 from Germany just pounding the ball for two days but ran out of gas Sat night. Duke just couldn't match Minn defense, pounded straight down only to be dug by Mn libero who was everywhere. Well played, well officiated tourney, first trip to Duke and liked what I saw.

From the Gopher site:
Minnesota's Jessica Granquist (Blaine, Minn.), Tabi Love (Dauphin, Manitoba) and Ashley Wittman (Shakopee, Minn.) were all named to the All-Tournament team. Christiana Gray (Duke), Ali McCurdy (Duke), Katie Dennehy (Delaware) and Belinda Behncke-Biney (North Carolina Central) were all named to the All-Tournament team.

He does a graceful sidestep of the Gibbemeyer question, too.

I thought McClendon might be the best freshman this year, but watching Wittman tonight has made me change my mind. Could Deja playing Stanford and Florida this weekend, and Wittman playing Duke and Delaware make a difference in performance?

Could Deja playing Stanford and Florida this weekend, and Wittman playing Duke and Delaware make a difference in performance? I'm assuming that's a rehtorical question... Anyway, we'll have plenty of time to see what either of these players are made of as they head through the BigTen season.

Having watched both play ACC competition and others in the two tournaments in North Carolina, I still give the edge to Deja. Deja may not hit as hard, but the comparisons to Megan Hodge are valid as far as athleticism and ability. McClendon has better serve receive skills and defense too. Every team targeted Wittman this weekend and had decent success at times. McClendon got served many times in the UNC tournament but she was not aced as much and was often able to get consistent forward motion on the passes. Not saying either was terrible, but I still give the edge to Deja.

Duke cannot get over the hump of beating a solid ranked team....there defense is not as good as last years.

Granny is really making a name for herself this year - she's made the all-tournament team at all three tournaments the Gophers have played in this year.
