So I was talking to this guy about Nebraska and why I think they should just run a 5-1 with Anderson and he said no because of the setters height, that she is a blocking liability and thats why they run a 6-2.
I think 6' is a great height for a setter. What do you guys think?

I don't think that is why Nebraska runs a 6-2. There are a lot of really good setters who are under 6 feet. The women's net is so low that most players can easily get their hands above the net to get a touch on the ball.

Depends on volume in jump and strength

6' is big for a setter, even at the DI level. 5-10 is probably the average.

Not all 'short" setters are blocking liabilities. Two of Hawaii's best were short but excellent blockers. Kanoe Kamana'o averaged almost a block a set when she teamed up with Victoria Prince. Robin Ah Mow and Angela Ljungquist were devastating blockers in their time.

This is a good time to remember Courtney Thomson's height when she set the Huskie's to a national championship in '05 & was subsequently named top volleyball player of the year.

This comes down to a coach's preference. Some don't want a short setter, some don't care.

I loved CT, but she did become known as "Stump" on the national team, and hasn't been seen much lately- I have no real information, but I doubt that it's because of her setting.

My post was about a setter's height for the college game.

Do you think L. Cook will set a 5-1 for Nebraska next year?

I was interested to learn lately that Carli Lloyd at 5'10" had become the #10 all time blocker for Cal, with quite a bit of playing to go. Cal has had some pretty good blockers.

I may be nit-picking, but I think Lloyd plays is 5'11 or so, as she is listed in Cal's site. Examining the team photo, she is shorter than Loerch but not by too much, and matches Barrett and beats Freeman, all who are standing up in the second row of the photo. But that is moot, because Lloyd's athletic ability means she is playing well above her height. Recent posters have noted she could have made a good hitter because of her live arm and overall athleticism. It is an interesting point to bring up because right now, on TV, 5'9 Brianne Barker for Oklahoma is going against 6'2 Allie Sawatzky for TAMU are facing off...I think it exemplifies that at a certain point, height is a bonus and a setter must be a leader to be good.
