Football has its' own redshirt rule that players once during their eligibility period can play 4 games (believe that is the number) in a season and can redshirt that season without having to use a medical redshhirt. Know that it is used quite often in football. Didn't check the UNLV quarterback but if only played those 3 games and has not redshirted previously, could use a redshirt and not lose a season of eligibility.

Unless she has a season ending injury, she can't redshirt this year bc she played in matches. Like you, I'm surprised that she hasn't played much. Are you sure that's correct? I initially thought that... but then there's the whole UNVL situation going on, where the starting quarterback led the Rebels to a 3-0 record and then said he was redshirting the rest of the season because they reneged on a verbal deal. So I think at some point the redshirt rules changed? As vbfan4everr said, they changed for football a few years ago. IIRC players can play in four games in FB and this year they changed the rule so that postseason play does not count so you can play that too. They've talked about having some version of that for other sports too but, so far, it's just for football. In other sports, if you play in one match, you burn your season (except for exhibition matches and medical hardships)

Pringle often seems to react slow to get to a ball. Then she makes a dramatic dive to the floor when moving sooner would make the play easier. When I watched Cawa play on her club team I expected she would be a starting DS for Stanford her freshman year. Apparently Pringle is playing better in practice. Cawa was a decorated prep player. In 2023 she was captain of her high school team which MaxPreps ranked #1 in the country. She was on the Under Armour All America team. Word, would you care to give an opinion about whether Cawa has the skill this season for a Stanford starting DS position? Harvey is more comfortable hitting on the left side than the right side. On the right the positioning of her approach is not at an optimal level. Sometimes she is under the ball, sometimes too far to the left or right of the ball. Maybe she will improve as the season goes on. I hope Hambly finds a solution in 2025 for the right side and lets Harvey compete for OH although that's unlikely. I would say you are correct in your assessment. Hambly being loyal to a senior seems to be whats happening. The calendar just changed to October so I would preach patience for now as Hambly will slowly make changes as changes are needed. None of us are in the practice gym though, although some kids step up differently in games than others. I expect Cawa to get some run sooner or later.

Really dumb to just do it for one sport and not the rest.

Or maybe set a limit on the number of sets played throughout the season.

It's especially aggravating in situations like Faumuina's where she sat out all season bc she wanted to redshirt but then Tuaniga couldn't play so the team needed her. But I think anyone should be able to decide to redshirt after a couple of matches. Players still only have five years to complete four seasons so I don't see the downside as long as they kept the number of matches you could play in small.

Why isn't Hambly using Cawa?
Is she injured? Are Pringle and Beaven better than her? Is he red shirting her?
Unless she has a season ending injury, she can't redshirt this year bc she played in matches. Like you, I'm surprised that she hasn't played much.
So what's Hambly's strategy? It's hard to see how they can make it to the FF this year. Their best chance was last year...but he couldn't seem to elevate them when the going got rough.

They have a lot to work on if they want to make the Final Four. Passing, floor defense, blocking, better hitting. (E.g., we hit .0.144 against Louisville. Ignoring Miner, only Kurt hit over .200. She hit 273. The two next best hitters hit .125. We hit .100 against Nebraska and, ignoring Miner, only Andrew hit over 0.70. Louisville hit 0.248, Nebraska hit 0.263)
I've never seen this team as a FF team but I think they have a chance. They're in a fairly large group of teams below Pitt and Nebraska. They're young (Andrew, Kurt, Cawa and Yu's first season, Harvey's first season as a starter, Francis's first healthy season, Pringle and Beaven are playing more) and motivated. All of them are probably focused, hard workers, and fast learners. After Pitt and Nebraska, all the teams have noticeable weaknesses. E.g. the commentator for the Louisville match spent a fair amount of time talking about the poor passing (in general) of both teams. We need to improve more than most of the other teams in that group and get somewhat lucky in our matchups if we want to make the FF.
eta parenthetical explaining what I meant by young

Any updates on Sarah Hickman? Rumored she start the recruiting process with Stanford. According to this news article, Sarah Hickman is committed to Stanford. thebuzzmagazines.com/articles/2024/09/sportzbuzz-october-2024At the chalk talk before the Kentucky match, Hambly made it sound like he expects Blyashov to play this season but not imminently. He mentioned the possibility of using her as a DS before she's ready to hit. He also acknowledged Beaven's passing struggles but insinuated that the other players on the bench were not passing any better than her in practice.

Good news about Hickman. What's her ranking?
About the current DS's. If Cawa is no worse than Beaven, why not try Cawa out. Cawa is the better investment given she's a freshman. Beaven only has 2.5 more months with the team.

I've seen her ranked as high as #10 in the 2026 class. Left handed OPPs who are 6'5" don't come along too often. I like her blocking technique in the videos I've seen. As an attacker she'll be decent to good projecting to the collegiate level. You know how it goes ... it all depends upon training/development and a lot of that will happen at Stanford.

Does the volleyball team have the same option as football to lower the acceptance parameters for student-athlete acceptance? I believe my son in law called it the pink versus white application or acceptance letter.
