And now we see the Longhorns in the Final Four, again. Perhaps the rumors of Stanford's death (11 months in advance) are greatly exaggerated?

FYI, the only reason why texas is back in the final four is due to faucette & company which I would rate higher than williams & company, spelman & company, wopat & company, bai & company, other wopat & company, cook & company... you get my point.

But how would you have rated "Faucette & Company" in December 2009?
By November of next year, Williams and Wopat could very well be like Faucette and Adams.

Stanford doesn't host a regional through 2014, at least, also.

But how would you have rated "Faucette & Company" in December 2009? yeah, she underperformed in 2009 but she outperformed most in 2007 & 2008. i base my judgement off of what we saw rather than what you HOPE will happen w/ williams, wopat, bai, etc. in the future!

I agree with you there -- there's no guarantee Williams and Wopat will develop into two of the best position players in the country. But by the same token, there's no evidence to say that they won't. It's one of those Rumsfeld "unknown unknowns". I will add, however, that from what I see, Williams does have the potential. I would not be surprised to see her as a 1st team AA at the end of 2011.

I think C Wopat should move to the outside. I saw her play in high school and she can definitely crush those pipes. Since their passing will probably not be very good, they need to get the ball to C Wopat and moving her to the outside is the only logical choice. With that said, I also think they need another setter. Karissa Cook did fine, but I think they can find someone better. They also need this incoming frosh (DS) to be better than Benjamin or Luck. I don't see Benjamin being an effective Libero. For having two years under her belt, she's still is not a very consistent passer. Williams and C Wopat on the outside would be an amazing combo add to that Bai and Cook setting 6-2. Cook goes in for Spelman back row and Bai plays all around. S. Wopat can come in for Bai front row if needed. Middles (Brown/e and Walker). They'll be fine!

Let's break it down:
1. Rachel Williams can really "hammer" the ball. She has a BIG vertical jump, and has great blocking technique. She is an ok passer and defender, but needs more in-game experience. Don't kill me on this observation, but I think she needs to do the same thing Tarrah Murrey did at Cal -- hit the weight room and get her body in tip-top shape. That will further help her quickness and improve her vertical. Every inch higher she can jump is important in the Pac-10 (or 12) because of the imposing size of the blockers.
2. Carly Wopat has a very solid all-around game. She has steadily improved her hitting throughout the year, but her primary weapon is the slow one set. She needs to be able to hit the back slide effectively and improve her timing on faster one sets. She is not the tallest MB, but does have a very good vertical. As far as conditioning goes -- only a little fine tuning is necessary.
3. Haley Spelman made big strides as a hitter this year, but still lacks some consistency. The one skill she really needs to improve is her blocking. I'm hoping that will be a big emphasis in the off season.
4. Lydia Bai is sort of a wild card. We know she looked good in some of the early season scrimmages, but where she now is skill wise is sort of a mystery. I'm thinking she can be a lot like Cassidy Lichtman -- not next year necessarily, but maybe after experiencing one year in Pac-12 trenches.
5. Sam Wopat has pretty good offensive skills as she proved when subbing in a few times during the season against Pac-10 opposition. Her main weakness is blocking and that is specifically why Rachel Williams was Dunning's choice at OH 2. I think her floor defense and passing are around the same quality as Rachel Williams'.
6. Finally, a general comment. Stanford will be a pretty small team next year in relation to other top Pac-12 teams. They will have to make it up with floor defense, high quality setting, and passing. Otherwise, a finish outside the top four or five in the conference could be in the CARDs. Winning the Pac-12 is probably not possible considering how loaded USC is (or will be). Cal, UW, and UCLA will be their major competition and Stanford will fight it out with them for the number 2, 3, 4, and 5 spots in the conference.
