Has KK every shown any real promise as a coach? As a player, this guy was the best. But, from watching and listenting to him on ESPN, I have not been overly impressed with how he communicates the game. Do the current USA women rave about his coaching abilities? Do other college coaches fear him as an opposing coach? For that matter, has HMac proven that he can take the women's program to a higher level. When I look at some of our past National Team coaches, I find that there is no real correlation to major success at the college game. I am surprised that somebody with a great college pedigree has not become visible for the Minnesota gig. Quite frankly, Carlston is a good coach, but I have not seen him light things on fire in Columbus. I wonder about Reed Sunahara, Craig Skinner, Eric Sullivan, Tom Hilbert, Sherry Dunbar, or even Kevin Hambly. Minnesota took good care of Dr. Mike. The money is in the budget and despite what some of the Gopher fans have led us to believe, volleyball is a big deal in Minneapolis. At this point KK's impact and contribution is in relating to players, understanding the level of play, and helping players mentally. I have s two former players who are training with the NT and they really value his feedback. He is still learning how to teach parts of the game and how to teach skill development, but that is secondary at this level, and also something Hugh is very good at. Karch is a rockstar and his experience and winning attitude are invaluable. I think he also brings a very high level of intensity to the gym, if you know anything about Karch. I think he is a great "assistant" at this point, and will ultimately be a great head coach. This is a guy that would be succesful at anything, he has talent, and drive.

If the Golden Gophers could land Karch, I don't think they would be disappointed. And when it comes to recruiting against the likes of Nebraska and PSU, having Karch wouldn't hurt either.

Something tells me Karch is not interested in leaving the sunny confines of SoCal for Minnesota winters.

Oh, c'mon. We have a sun. I think. Not only do you have a sun but in the time it takes to drink a cup of coffee you can watch the sun rise and then set again [depending of how high the snowbanks are piled].

Could the next Minnesota coach have the initials "KK"? Three-Time National Champion "KK"?!!! LOL, now I got Beth Mowen's voice stuck in my head.

You may overestimate the effect Karch would have on recruiting. I'm always amazed at how little young players know about the history of their sport. Some won't even know who he is. There are major league baseball players who don't know some of the baseball stars from 10-15 year ago. Sure their coaches or parents can tell them but how much do 17 year olds listen to them anyway?

Do you really want to recruit a kid who doesn't know who Karch is? Seems like a good test right there.

Talked to Karch for a while at regionals, I asked some of my players if they wanted to meet him, they didnt know who he was. I told him and he laughed. Kids are different these days, and so is the mystique of national team. When I was playing college, I could tell you every member and alternate of the NT, men and women. Im in volleyball for a living, and couldnt tell you more than 4-5 players on our mens team. Kids have a zillion places their energy goes, and most of it texting.

Quite frankly, Carlston is a good coach, but I have not seen him light things on fire in Columbus. Thank you. Minnesota is a good job, but not a great job. I don't think it is enough to pull an established veteran coach from where they are unless his situation is really tentative. Dr. Mike went to Minnesota in the first place because Illinois decided that women's basketball was their flagship women's sport, supplanting volleyball. They had hired Theresa Grentz (sp?) from Rutgers to be their women's basketball coach are was going to pour more resources in building that program and taking it away from volleyball. Geoff is undergoing a process of transitioning the Ohio State program into his own and he is doing pretty well, he'd gone through this once before, at Ohio, so I am pretty sure he has a blueprint that he is following, we have not seen the tangible evidence yet because the effects of his influence has not matured to the point where we can see it. But I think it is much more realistic to be targeting someone like Geoff: young coach but with experience in transitioning a program than targeting someone who has no experience or is closer towards the end of their career.

One of the best things I ever did was taking my juniors team to Colorado Spring when we were out there for Crossroads. John kessel was good enough to host us and we got to walk through the OTC. John made a point of stopping at two places: the statue dedicated to Flo Hyman and the area where you can look up anyone who was an Olympian for the USA. John gave my kids a pep talk on who Flo was and her significance to the sport that they were playing. Both of us got a little verklempt, but my kids definitely knew who Flo was after that experience.

After (R)uffda!'s question I got to thinking I'd ask my DD's team mates - I'm sure that all will know Kerri Walsh and Misty May, but I'd be surprised if even 2 out of 10 know who KK is, and that might be as a commentator for some of the matches they watched last fall.
