What is the love NBC has for these two?
During the Gibb/Rosie match, she recapped Gibbs journey overcoming cancer. She made it seem like she spoke to him about it, but it was almost verbatim to the video released this week. NBC couldn't find a better sideline reporter?
Barnett just comes off as a cocky know it all, to me.

He has played both professionally and in the Olympics in the rally-scoring era which pretty much gives him a carte blanche to be a "know it all." His comments are generally spot on, if you actually understand how the game works at this level. To a casual observer may be he comes off as pretentious but his job isn't to explain the game to 3rd graders. Have you ever watched basketball or football? Those commentators are far more self-righteous than Barnett even comes close to being.

Barnett is just a douche. I don't care how much someone understands the game of volleyball, he comes off as spiteful and all-knowing.

Barnett is probably my favorite volleyball announcer. Granted, its a very shallow pol but he its the best of the lot. Name someone better.

Kevin Barnett is one of my favorite commentators and the combo of him and Sunderland is one of my favorites.
Though I think my favorite commentator was curling one at the Vancouver Olympics

Sent from my MB860 using proboards Paul Sunderland Sunderland has moved on top the announcer role. Barnett is still in the color role. Kind of different. But to your point, would you say anyone else is better than Barnett? Cox? Karch? The woman who did the Beth what's her name? Tennant? Sent from my MB860 using proboards

Sunderland and Barnett are very knowledgeable, but they both come across like they're doing the play by play for brain surgery. They're far too serious, as though the teams are battling a war or finding a cure for cancer, rather than calling an entertaining event. Chris Marlow has a great demeanor. I'd like to see Paul and Kevin lighten up!

Barnett is great if you know the game, but a majority of the viewers watching the Olympics do not. And just because you "played both professionally and in the Olympics" does not make you a great commentator.

Heather Cox was a volleyball player who now covers almost everything as a professional sideline reporter. I don't care for her as an analyst, but for the sideline I think its better than having a pro like Michelle Tafoya who doesn't know what she is watching.
As for Barnett, between The Net Live and the universal sports work he's become THE guy. I think he does a nice job but I guess I can see how he comes across rough when Sunderland is saying things like "Kevin, explain the antenna rule" when he may have had something more insightful to say after that play. I'm not sure people realize how much practice the broadcast teams for Monday Night football or other mainstream sports broadcasts do. MLB broadcast teams work together 162 nights for years or decades. Sunderlin and Barnett might tape 15-20 and do 10 matches live in a normal year, and it isn't plug and play. They have two weeks and I'm sure they'll be more in sync late next week and both will look much better.

I did find it interesting though how complementary he was toward Davis in the women's match & we all know she's the weak spot on the team.
