I dunno. Kid to raise. New job. All of the above. Sure makes it hard to keep up with "extra" things, doesn't it?

Extra? Extra? Dump the job, they're good for nothing but an excuse to gripe- or get the kid to do it.

Johnson would need a medical redshirt, which would be another injury that shows up in medical records, and nobody wants that. Redshirting Rostrattor makes more sense if the season goes in the tank and if she is coming back to Berkeley for a graduate year. Not really familiar with rules of redshirting, but why is it not desirable and how does it affect medical records? Is Rostratter's continuation with grad school at Cal just speculation? For those who are raving Kerr as the next libero, is this based on her passing ability or simply her atheleticism/genetics? Would Kerr be able to beat out Rostratter? Assuming Johnson/Brown/Hawari all graduate this year, middle would be quite thin with just Schonewise returning, and the addition of Jordan, with the decommitment of Ogbogu. It'd be interesting to see Vukasavic in the middle. I'm looking forward to her development, but I liker her versatility in being able to hit quicks, slides, and 5s. I'm also liking Gombar's explosiveness and dynamic back row play, just hoping that she can be a more potent attacker.

Surprised at the scores from the Arizona game, and from the comments Cal should've put away the first set as well. Hoping that it's more because Cal is finding it's rhythm than it is because Arizona was just playing poorly. Was able to catch the last set. Not sure what Feller told the squad but the passing and defense really allowed the middle/opposite to make a difference, which in effect opened things up on the outside. Seemed like Higgins also had a great match when she came in.

The first set Cal was up, 21-15 and lost 25-22. Mainly it was one Arizona server who they couldn't handle getting a bunch of serves in a row in- passing for both teams was really shaky, especially the first set and a half. Cal started the second set similarly, with Gombar and Brown going on long serving runs for a 12-2 lead.

What is going on with Rostratter? Has she played at all this season? Any chance she will take a redshirt?

Hasn't played; there's fan chatter about a redshirt, but I don't know if it goes farther than that. I can't remember offhand what the problem is- not concussions, anyway.

She had a boot on during the pre-conference scrimmage.

Rostrattor's problem is essentially a groin pull. Re Johnson, since she has played a point she cannot do a regular redshirt. You can get a medical redshirt, but have to convince the NCAA, via medical records, that injuries really kept you from playing, and you can only play a certain percentage of sets, or some such. Johnson must be approaching that amount, and played pretty well today anyway (the better the passing the better she plays, offensively, I'll bet). Rostrattor hasn't played at all so would be eligible for a redshirt, but of course that depends on what her plans are.

Too much focus on libero. If Kerr is that good, playing WITH Rostrattor will be fantastic. Cal might have two reliable passers at least. It takes a lot more than a libero to play good defense.

Kerr is the libero for the # 1 ranked HS team in the country. She's incredibly athletic and passes nails.... you hardly ever see liberos make the top 100 list and she was one of the select few. Feller has to be happy with that

Understand now the different redshirt scenarios between Rostratter and Johnson, thanks.
Excited about Kerr based on the comments in this thread. Imagine if Rostratter were also to return now that she's out for the season. What Cal really needs though is a 6 rotation OH who can really pass. Hopefully Neumayr will be able to return next year.
Really a shame the number of injuries this year with Gehan now out for an unspecified amount of time. Don't think Milosalvlijevic was in uniform either. Some discussion over on the Cal vs Oregon thread about who to play where. I'd really like to see Hawari passing, regardless of whether she remains in the middle (modified libero sub situation) or gets moved to Opp. She was passing during spring ball and the scrimmage earlier this fall and I was impressed. She does also hit better than Johnson off of 2 feet. As was mentioned in the other thread, Johnson could return to her natural position in the middle where she trained with USA A2 for 2 years. The only drawback I see to Hawari getting moved to Opp is blocking where all the players would all have to adjust to switch.
Also interesting that someone brought up have Parrott pass. Kinda makes sense if you think about it, since setters have to bump set quite a bit off of bad passes.
My lineup based on current available players (Higgins, Vukasovic, Gombar, Parrott, Caloiaro, Brown, Johnson, Hawari, Davis, McKennon):
OH: Gombar, Higgins (DS with Davis) MB: Hawari (passing when Higgins is in), Johnson (Brown as a blocking sub) Opp: Vukasovic (Parrott back row) S: Caloiaro L: McKennon

Understand now the different redshirt scenarios between Rostratter and Johnson, thanks. Johnson won't qualify for the additional season via hardship waiver. First would be that it would have to be considered some sort of season-ending illness or injury. She's got a nagging injury and I think that medical staff would be hard-pressed to document it as something that would absolutely prevent her from playing for the rest of the season. Taking a real redshirt year doesn't require any of that. Someone simply doesn't play. It doesn't matter if it was voluntary, keeping someone out because of a nagging injury, or a truly season-ending injury. The other thing is that Johnson won't qualify. I think they're right at the 50% point via matches played and under the 50% point via dates of competition. Cal also has no guarantees of making the postseason, which would increase both. The other thing is that she's already played in 10 of 30 scheduled matches as well as 10 of 28 dates of competition. That's already over the 30% limit and isn't likely to be under unless Cal manages to make the postseason and plays a while.

From the Cal OregonState thread, seemed like the following lineup: Caloiaro at setter, followed by Higgins (Gombar back row), Brown, Johnson (Davis back row), Vukasovic, Hawari
Looks like Vukasovic also had passing duties. Hopefully she can develop into a 6 rotation player and dominate. Excited about Vukasovic's development, this is her chance to really shine.
