This has to be one of the more boring off-seasons on this board for Hawaii fans. I keep waiting for news of an international player. It has been a while since Shoji got a high profile international recruit, I think Maja Gustin was the last one. As culturally diverse as Hawaii is, and with the natural allure for foreign players, that seems like a really long time. Shouldn't Scott Wong be in China looking for a 6'4" RS? 10-4 BYU-UH got those few from China. Managed to be great players since they didnt get much trainning back home. Chinas supposedly to be one of the worlds tiring trainning place for volleyball since their national team pratices 13 hrs a day. some of these chinese girl can bang. just gottah look for that one tall player like with BYU Provo. they got that 6'7 girl who pretty much didnt play high school VB but tried out in college and eneded up being a phenom for BYU took her what two years to come byu top players...

I sometimes wonder why volleyball programs don't just put an ad out that says "We have one scholarship, will go to any girl who can dunk a basketball." It seems to be the way things are headed. While it is nice getting polished players I think most coaches would trade them for a raw athlete with huge upside. Even if they never reach that ceiling, it would be worth the two that don't work out for every Tayyiba Haneef or Destinee Hooker you end up with. Shoji seems to prefer agile players over tall ones, but I don't think it would hurt to have a tall utility player, even if all she can do is block.

Well, Shoji's had Alexis Forsythe (6-4) and she played behind Amber Kaufman (6-0), Brittany Hewitt (6-3) and Emily Hartong (6-2). Corinne Cascioppo (6-4) played behind Aneli Otineru (5-11). Lauren Duggins (6-0) moved ahead of Maja Gustin and Karin Lundqvist (both 6-3). Nohea Tano (5-11) played ahead of Susie Boogaard (6-2) both years that they played together. Would you have made a different decision? Kari Gregory was 6-3 and was a big blocker, but was lacking in offense and had to be replaced by Kaufman in the lineup. Victoria Prince (6-0) over Melody Eckmier (6-3), Juliana Sanders (6-2) and Gregory. It would be great if the tall players actually produced better than the smaller, agile players.
I'm not knocking on the tall players at all. Gregory was a great blocker, Forsythe and Eckmier, particularly, made the most of their opportunities and had several moments of brilliance. Lundqvist was a great person to go to if a different look was needed. But the smaller players moved ahead of them and I can't bring myself to disagree with Shoji's decisions.

Todays article mentioned that Texas will most likely start the season against Texas. UCLA, San Diego, Arizona, and Northwestern will be here along with New Mexico State. Shoji has 25 of 28 matches scheduled so far. Spring training starts next month and it confirms Stephanie Hagins has left UH. The Wahine will have a spring match against Texas Tech on March 15th.

It was mentioned in a local blog that a reason she tranfered was personal. I wish her good luck and God bless. Had she stayed, I expected her to play a lot more than this past season.
