I'm not sure that a lot of this is even true, but you have to also ask yourself just how random you want the results of volleyball matches to be. At some point, you're just rolling dice. Don't you want the games to be long enough for the better team to establish itself as the better team? 25-point games doesn't really do that, but 21-point games will only exacerbate the problem. But, and this is the crucial point, why do you want LESS of the sport? Is it really that awful to sit through? Do you not believe 3 out of 5 to 25 isnt enough to determine who is better? Not always, obviously. That's part of why some people like rally-scoring, and to 25. It's upset-friendly. Games to 21 would be even more so. Correct? I think it swings too far in that direction AND I don't want less volleyball.

So we'll have some matches end in less than an hour. Yeah, that will be worth the ticket price and travel. (ok, in my case neither is significant, but still). Seriously, I leave work at 5pm for a 6pm local college game and half the time I don't make it until the break between 2 and 3. With 21 pts I might not make it at all.

Hey here's an idea. How about we play to just 15 but you can only score when you serve?

I don't understand this obsession with LESS volleyball... I really have to question driving several hours to an away game when it's going to end so quickly.
I agree that the shorter sets can be a bit more exciting, but if that's the desire, play to 20 or even 15 (I havn't worked out the math) , but go best of 7 instead of best of 5. Something where the individual sets are shorter, but the total amount of volleyball remains similar.
I was upset enough at changing NCAA from 30 to 25, only going to 21 points seems ridiculous, why should fans even bother showing up unless they literally live next to the arena and attendance is free?

Back in the old days, club volleyball players were taught how to play volleyball. You know, the game of volleyball. EVERYONE (regardless of height or position) was taught how to serve, set, pass, hit, block, cover, play defense...front row and back row.
They still do this in Brazil.
After the liebro and specialization, they were taught LESS volleyball, only what they needed to know for their position. Very few actually learned how to play the GAME of volleyball.
Other than creating a future group of coaches who not only couldn't actually play volleyball themselves, we are creating a group of coaches who will be unable to TEACH volleyball to their players, except for the few things that the coach actually knows.
So, in a Capitalistic system, the clubs should charge less money because the players are getting less coaching and learning fewer skills.
Also, entrance fees to volleyball matches should be reduced (if the matches are shortened by the proposed rule change to 21 points/game.)

I just don't get it. Majority of games are already incredibly short - I can't count the number of times I leave the gym or turn off the TV and go "that's all? It's already over?".

Because, as (R)uffda! said, the FIVB doesn't care about the sport of volleyball. They just care about being "big shots." They would change the name of the game to ESPN Ball, play with 15 on a side and use a bowling ball if they thought that would get them TV time.

Can you imagine side out scoring in the men's game now? Go back rip the jump serve & the first to 15 aces wins. That's their problem. With the women's game, I think sideout scoring would be a big improvement. There are some games for which 25 points is too many, and other for which it would be great if the game just kept on going. And you know what? The ones where 25 points seems long are the same ones that would be over quickly at 15-5 or so under sideout scoring. The good games, the ones you want to see last even longer, would be 16-14. Maybe sideout scoring could be improved a little. There isn't really a need to win by two under sideout rules, because each team faces the equal disadvantage of having to score from the serve. First one to 15 could just take it. Or maybe if you think 15 is too long, first one to 13 could take it.

I think shorter sets would tend to expose any weak rotations, since a 5 point run could just kill you. Also I fear it would lead to more specialization.
I think they already tried time-based games, and it didn't work out so well. Rose said he had a game where he told his server to just serve it out to kill the clock. Sort of like the way basketball games always end with a bunch of boring fouls and free throws, and the last 2 minutes take *forever* (very TV unfriendly IMHO!).

Sort of like the way basketball games always end with a bunch of boring fouls and free throws, and the last 2 minutes take *forever* (very TV unfriendly IMHO!). yeah, i used to play in a mens league that had a ton of teams, and played once/week on 3 courts. there were also like 4 divisions, and they all played on the same courts that one day, so time was at a premium. so they made each match 30 minutes, played 3 sets no matter what, and allowed 8 minutes/set. guess what happened. if the team that was serving was ahead in the last minute (the time was on the big scoreboard, since every court began & ended at the same time), they became the very worst servers the world has ever seen. some were so bad they served it past the far sideline of the last court down at the other end of the gym. and yet, somehow during the first 7 minutes they were laser-accurate. imagine that...

I hated it during the international games when it would be high deep serves trying to peg the endline...their version of the men's jumpserve ace game
