Saw "Unbroken" last week. Incredible story of the human spirit and will. Didn't know what to feel after. Almost speechless. Also saw "American Sniper" this weekend. Keep thinking about it. What a story, and what a soldier and "sheepdog". Very enlightening regarding the evils and lasting effects of war. Great performances and fantastic directing. Tastefully done actually with regard to the subject matter.

The $90 million+ weekend box office for American Sniper is astounding.
The promotion for the movie has been well done and all over the media, but I don't think anyone could have predicted this box office success in January. Also at a time when the wars in the middle east have been ongoing for so long. Maybe the recent terrorist attacks contributed to interest in the movie. Or maybe the popularity of Eastwood and Bradley Cooper.
I may have to go watch it now instead of waiting for it to come to pay tv.

Just saw the American remake of the Korean film "Oldboy" on DVD. I remembered the twist and the general plot, but not the details of the original. The original Korean movie was decent. The American remake was kind of crappy.

Watched Lucy and Gone Girl last weekend. Gone Girl was pretty good, not as great as so many people I know have made it out to be but still very good. Lucy was just an absolute train wreck. Too many problems to list. One main problem was it felt like 3 different films, and I later found out that the writer/director was actually inspired by 3 films...this just made an already terrible movie even more terrible as it just kept changing the movie too much.

Wow, watching Gone Girl is a marathon by itself, that movie is like three hours long. Watching another film on the same day is quite an accomplishment. ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)

^ tb's: In a nutshell this family-friendly tale begins with an amusing background story that sets the humor and tone for the film, which is based on the popular children’s books by Michael Bond. Paddington bear is made entirely out of CGI and successfully exudes the warmth and charm his character is known for. It feels very British and has some of the magical wit brought to us by the producers of the hugely successful Harry Potter movies. Its tumble-of-fun action sequences are perfect for small children. It's mildly entertaining for parents too; the humor is pretty juvenile, although there are some funny lines that will go over children’s heads.
yeah, tidbits.
.. i recommend

Watched A Most Wanted Man (Philip Seymour Hoffman). It's a spy and rendition movie -- one type of movie I really like.

Paddington is surprisingly good. (Yes, I have young kids.) How was Lord Grantham? He was really funny in the TV show Galavant that's been on the last couple of weeks. Surprised me!

John LeCarre writes really good books. I haven't read a single John LeCarre book, but I've seen a bunch of movie adaptations. I really liked: The Tailor of Panama Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (the American film was very complicated yet entertaining; the British miniseries was more clear but less entertaining) The Spy Who Came in From the Cold A Most Wanted Man I remember liking A Russia House, but I can't remember a dang thing about it, other than the fact that it starred Sean Connery. I didn't like The Constant Gardener.

*spoilers for The Interview*
The assassination scene wasn't really a full-on assassination. It felt more like an act of vengeance. It made sense, because Skylark (Franco) befriended Kim Jong-Un, bonding whilst listening to Katy Perry in a tank. Then, Skylark realizes that North Korea really is a cruel country, and that he has been duped by Kim. In the interview, Skylark exposes Kim in front of all the people of North Korea, drilling Kim with questions like, "How can you starve your people when the UN gives you $200M in food aide". Kim dodges the questions, and it escalates from there in a violent/action type of sequence. Skylark escapes the interview, gets inside the tank, and Kim is gunning him down in a helicopter. Skylark launches a missile at the helicopter, Kim goes down in flames, and Skylark escapes North Korea. I found it entertaining. I liked Seth Rogen hooking up with one of the Koreans, who eventually became an ally. I like the sexual humor, and there was a side-story that Kim's father used to call him gay. Even I sympathized with Kim during the first half, "Don't kill him!" But no, I'm glad Franco took him out. I thought it was good and enjoyable.
Note: I also liked "This is the End" and "Neighbors"
