The wife, kids, and I saw The Man Who Knew Too Much1956 version? Is that the worst-ever Hitchcock movie? If not, it must be at least in the running.

I don't know about now but back in the 1990s (and before), the Stanford Theater in downtown Palo Alto used to show old movies. The wife, kids, and I saw The Man Who Knew Too Much and On the Town there. Other movies, too, but I've forgotten them. Maybe Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and The Third Man. I don't go by the theater anymore so I have no idea if the theater is still there. I remember going to see Barbarella at the Stanford..,late 80’s...maybe?

Maybe it was the preview of Mortal Kombat's first 9 minutes that I saw on YouTube, but DAMN! Cannot wait for its release tomorrow on HBO Max.

The later Mortal Kombat games had good stories, as games go anyway. Some fans say, only half-jokingly, that the Mortal Kombat 11 game provides a better cinematic experience than most Hollywood so-called action movies these days. I like MK 11 for finally doing justice to the Liu Kang character, because Liu Kang had been treated in rather slipshod fashion in some of the previous games, turning him evil and so on, but in 11, he gets a story arc that satisfied me.

Hmm, I'm not sure I've ever played a fighting game that had what I would call a good story, even by video game standards. The Injustice games (same studio as MK) were probably the closest, and for the fighting game genre, they're pretty good. But there are a lot of video games with much better stories.

Depends...given the limitations of the genre, I thought MK's stories were pretty good. They do try to flesh out the characters and their motivations and you do root for them. So I will disagree here.

Interesting movie, Mortal Kombat. Would have loved to see more of the Hanzo/Bi-Han storyline...definitely wanted more of the Scorpion/Sub-Zero fight sequences. When I heard the iconic phrase “GET OVER HERE”, just sent chills down my spine. I am satisfied with the movie overall, but I can see fans of the game tear it apart. Never knew about the arcana...I wasn’t impressed about it. Guess I’m too old school only exposed to the original arcade game and the first two movies.🤣
Having said that, the ending surely left the door open for a sequel!

The number one thing I look for in a movie is whether it entertains me in balance. Usually any major action or super hero release would do. Inevitably, all of those would contain logical holes, bad acting, bad scripts, etc. However, after watching even the lesser ones I would still consider the overall good out-weighing the overall bad.
One exception I remembered was Fantastic Four in 2015, which at the end of the movie I questioned the skill, or the lack of care, of the director.
I am adding Without Remorse to that short list.
Unfortunately, Michael B Jordan, a good actor, was in both.

Tom Clancy. Hard to believe that's still a thing.
The best thing I think I ever read by him was the only (AFAIK) novel he wrote that was not part of his "Jack Ryan" series. It was a novelization of a wargame about what a non-nuclear North Atlantic war would look like, called Red Storm Rising. It's not a great novel or anything, but at least it's not as formulaic as his other stuff.

Hackett then had his format used for World War Z. I always liked Hunt for Red October and then after that and RSR, ignored everything after.

The Hunt for Red October is the only Tom Clancy book that I've read, and it is a good novel. However, I think the movie adaptation is unquestionably better, as it excises the meandering 20-page sections about random fighter pilots or whatever to instead keep the focus squarely on Ramius and Ryan.

I enjoyed A Quiet Place 2. I wasn’t ready to go to a theater for perhaps a few more months yet. Then a 17-hour power outage within the few blocks of my house gave me no choice . Krasinski the director did not think to have a sequel, and the 2018 A Quiet Place ended as such. Nevertheless, they found a logical way to make this excellent Part 2 – when money talked. I’ll definitely watch A Quiet Place 3, which has already been announced for a 2023 release. But I’ll wait for the early reviews before deciding it’ll be real theatre or home theatre.

Watched Let Him Go on HBO Max the other evening with Kevin Costner and Diane Lane. As usual, I am a sucker for the cinematography but the movie does move a little slow but okay overall.
