Watched Nomadland this past weekend. Great cinematography. Strong acting job by Frances McDormand. Some will find it depressing and some will find it uplifting. There can be something romantic about traveling the country on a journey but the solitary life would be tough to take.

Do You think smaller Indy movies are gonna be next big thing? Quite honestly I think main stream stuff has just gone in the dumpster. So many money grabs recycling the same stuff over and over and over. I feel main stream has gotten extremely lazy. Plus many are just focused on pushing political agendas then putting together a good story with good character development. People keep rejecting this woke stuff in movies and sports as shown with ratings yet they keep double and tripling down on it. It’s pure madness. They may be able to slide some in if it was secondary to the actual story but many writers are trying to make it main focus and many don’t want that. We watch movies and sports to get away or have break from that madness. Putting it into our entertainment regardless what ideals people have is just pissing people off. Just write good stories. I think that’s all most want.

Watch foreign movies and critically-acclaimed movies. I don't think I've seen any of the Superhero movies in the past 10 years except for Wonder Woman and Black Panther and they were...meh. I've watched none of the Avenger movies.

Godzilla vs Kong is coming on HBO Max (which I don't have) and theaters on March 31st. All the closest theaters are still partially shutdown where I lived. Now how I can watch it:

GvK...I subscribed to HBO+ for this, Justice League Snyder Cut and the upcoming Mortal Kombat. Decent storyline, good action... complete cop out as the story became predictable. Also made Kong a bit too human-like. Waiting for the weekend to watch Snyder’s Justice League

Justice League Snyder’s Cut
OMG, made me embarrassed knowing I saw the previous version. Thought the SC explained better what was happening. Steppenwolf and Cyborg looked like bad-asses, better than the earlier version. And how they could have left Darkseid out until the very end in the original release is beyond me.
Humor was easier to watch...had cringed at some of the humor in the original release. And the SC is darker...who ever said dark is bad for DC comic movies is wrong, imo. The epilogue was great, specially the exchange between Batman and the Joker.
In all, I am amazed that majority of the additional 2+ hours were filmed before and not used. Read like only 5 minutes were reshoots for this release. Was thinking to myself wtf was Joss thinking when he was working on this. Either he really effed it up, or WB screwed the pooch by telling Joss the direction they wanted to go. Probably both.
After watching the SC, I’m hoping for more Justice League movies in the future.

Greyhound with Tom Hanks protecting the convoy during WWII.
Quite the intense movie once they’re crossing the Atlantic. Pretty good movie!

Had the afternoon off yesterday so watched Godzilla vs Kong. I'll say...I never knew there was something that huge hiding in Hong Kong, haha. It was the first time for me watching a movie in theaters in...far too long.
Overall, I enjoyed it. It was a fun movie. The movie moves along at a good pace and it never drags. The story was rather simple, it has to be admitted, merely an excuse to set up the two big monsters fighting, but...that's what I expected of a Godzilla movie. The hollow earth scenes were cool though. A nice twist on the "Journey to the Centre of the Earth" theme. The climatic battle in HK was also interesting. I would recommend watching it in the theaters, because the big screen experience can't be replicated at home.

I've seen 87 of the 100 on AFI's list. Maybe more but I can't remember a thing from some of them like The Gold Rush. The most recent one I watched was Bridge on the River Kwai. I saw it in the 1970s and then nothing for 50 years and saw it again recently. So great. Wow, 87 is a lot. If I was that close, I'd probably watch the last 13 just to say that I'd seen them all. Speaking of older movies, I saw The Good, the Bad and the Ugly for the first time a few years ago, and I was amazed that it was released in 1966. It was at least 20 years ahead of its time. I can't believe it wasn't on the AFI list, which is one of the reasons I have a hard time taking that list seriously. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly is the best Western I've ever seen. It's the #9 movie on IMDB, and it has a sparkling 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, so I'm not sure what the AFI was thinking with its omission. The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly is not an American film. So that's probably why it's not on the American Film Institute's list.

So that's probably why it's not on the American Film Institute's list. Yeah, I looked into that, and while that's sort of true, there were other films on the list that were also not really American either. I can't remember exactly which ones of the top of my head. The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly was co-financed by an American production company, so I think it should still qualify. Edit: According to Wikipedia, Lawrence of Arabia, The Bridge on the River Kwai, and A Clockwork Orange were all British-made, but they were financed by American production companies. That's fine, but by that standard, The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly should also qualify.

The Uptown Theater in Minneapolis in the late 70’s used to show classic movies from mostly the 30’s and 40’s. Changed movies a couple times a week. They might have been double features but I can’t remember that. I went there a lot and it was a great treat. I have a hard time not putting Casablanca way high on the list of all time greats! St. Clair theater in St. Paul did this too. I went to both theaters. Plus the Uptown was a great theater for foreign movies in the 1980s.

I don't know about now but back in the 1990s (and before), the Stanford Theater in downtown Palo Alto used to show old movies. The wife, kids, and I saw The Man Who Knew Too Much and On the Town there. Other movies, too, but I've forgotten them. Maybe Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and The Third Man. I don't go by the theater anymore so I have no idea if the theater is still there.
