I've seen 87 of the 100 on AFI's list. Maybe more but I can't remember a thing from some of them like The Gold Rush.
The most recent one I watched was Bridge on the River Kwai. I saw it in the 1970s and then nothing for 50 years and saw it again recently. So great.

So I will admit I wanted a movie collection more reflective of a multi-ethnic USA so I asked one of my co-workers in 2017 what Denzel Washington flicks he would recommend. From there he went on to suggest some Sidney Poitier titles and ones with African American female leads. So stop there right? Umm no. I found this great link on Wikipedia- best picture academy awards winners, and what's great about that site is not only does it list the winner but also four or five notable films that same year.
Just to name several examples, gone with the wind and wizard of oz both came out in 1939. Lawrence of Arabia and to kill a mockingbird in 1962. Dr. Zhivago and sound of music in 65. So I bought anything that sounded remotely interesting and I know a ton more about movies than I did three years ago. An old dog did learn some new tricks.
Despite the lack of diversity I do find a lot of old(er) films more interesting.

The best Denzel movies I've seen are Glory, Crimson Tide and Training Day. I was stunned to learn that the latter has just a 73% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Been watching a lot of new-ish horror films. Midsommar, Hereditary, It Comes At Night, Cabin in the Woods. All pretty good besides It Comes at Night.

The Uptown Theater in Minneapolis in the late 70’s used to show classic movies from mostly the 30’s and 40’s. Changed movies a couple times a week. They might have been double features but I can’t remember that. I went there a lot and it was a great treat.
I have a hard time not putting Casablanca way high on the list of all time greats!

I took a look at the top 100 according to the British film institute and it's pretty much a different list. Guess British and us cinema are different. A couple James Bond flicks showed up on the BFI list. dr. No I think was one of them.

Hell of a first two feature films for Ari Aster.

I saw it in the 1970s and then nothing for 50 years and saw it again recently. So great. Wow, 87 is a lot. If I was that close, I'd probably watch the last 13 just to say that I'd seen them all. Speaking of older movies, I saw The Good, the Bad and the Ugly for the first time a few years ago, and I was amazed that it was released in 1966. It was at least 20 years ahead of its time. I can't believe it wasn't on the AFI list, which is one of the reasons I have a hard time taking that list seriously. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly is the best Western I've ever seen. It's the #9 movie on IMDB, and it has a sparkling 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, so I'm not sure what the AFI was thinking with its omission.

I've heard good things. i think it's fantastic. it's billed as a horror movie but i don't think that is quite right. it's more of a suspenseful period piece with religious paranoia.
it's a slow burn and the ending is definitely worth it.
