I must’ve missed it... has it been confirmed the O’brien is going to Texas? I thought she quit volleyball I’m confused lol All the Texas volleyball players, Coach Elliot, and the Texas volleyball Instagram have followed her. Therefore, we are inferring that she will be involved with the team in some way. Very interesting. I feel like she would have announced by now, the season is 2 months away... I have a feeling she’s not going to be on the team and be a manager or volunteer of some sort because I recall her saying farewell to the sport on social media. Elliot was looking for a possible libero transfer in fleck, so it’s a possibility that maybe she is joining the team.

She absolutely could end up just being a grad assistant, but I do find it hard to believe she would be giving that much time to the team and not be playing. I think being a manager/volunteer assistant is even less likely. Also, she never said goodbye to the sport on social media. An Illinois article said that.

Being a grad assistant or a player would be smart financially. As such, you qualify for lower tuition rates. Instate cost for 2 semesters: $27,728 Out of state cost for 2 semesters: $55,230
On top of that, grad school courses cost more money.

Is a grad-transfer required to submit their name into the transfer portal? I'm assuming they do if they are still an undergraduate (not having actually graduated), but might not have to AFTER they receive their undergraduate degree.
The timeline for Morgan O'Brien is that she announced in January that she would not user her final year of eligibility at Illinois. Although she mentioned that she wanted to focus on academics, I'm not sure she ever said specifically that she would continue her education as a non-athlete at Illinois. I don't recall anyone on here ever reporting that O'Brien had entered the transfer portal. I'm assuming she stayed on scholarship in the Spring at Illinois, but if she didn't enter the transfer portal, coaches from other programs cannot contact her.
On May 26, someone posted on the Illinois thread that O'Brien would be attending Texas "in the Fall". That's about the time the Texas first summer session began classes. That's when we started seeing her following some Texas volleyball players on her Instagram account, and vice verse.
I checked the UT Student Directory last week, and there is a Morgan Clark O'Brien enrolled for the summer session at Texas as a grad student.
So, if she enrolled at Texas to attend graduate school and began attending classes but not on an athletic scholarship, it's almost like she's a "free agent" athletically. I'm not even sure Texas has a scholarship to award O'Brien (unless Gabriel is not on scholarship, or Parra isn't coming in the Fall). But, as a preferred walk-on, I assume she gets certain things paid (meals, tuition?).
Hope we hear something soon.

No splitting one among multiple players.

A "preferred walk-on" (like Reilly Heinrich) is different than a full scholarship player, or a than just a regular (non-preferred) walk-on.

Essentially the portal is just a database of potential transfer and being in the portal allows schools to contact you and take visits. However you may still be able to do the same by just getting a release from the school similar to the process prior to the portal. Preferred walk-ons are not eligible for any more "aid" than a regular walk-on. It's not an official term, but is used to identify walk-ons that are recruited and typically signifies that the walk-on is guaranteed a spot on the team rather than having to tryout for a spot. Walk-ons can get "training table" meals like scholarship athletes, but not sure if there is some limit on this. They typically also can get the same team related gear that scholarship athletes receive. However they can not receive any school related aid, such as tuition, that is athletics based. Any school related aid must be academic based or available to any student.

It is impermissible to talk to another school without being in the transfer portal. That includes grad transfers. That includes if your previous coach pulled your scholarship and kicked you off the team. The ‘release’ process doesn’t exist anymore. (At least in D1)

I'm pretty sure the creation of the portal was to do away with the need for a student-athlete to gain a release from their school. Entering the transfer portal is a way to place your name in a centralized database, and have coaches from other schools contact you.
Preferred Walk-On: These recruits are guaranteed a spot on the roster by the college’s coach. The coach wants the recruit on their team, but didn’t have a scholarship available for them. While they do not receive any financial assistance, they receive the same attention from the coaching staff and benefits that the scholarship athletes do. This means that they need to continue to treat every practice as if it were a tryout so that they can keep their place on the team and compete for future scholarships and playing time.

I believe the previous posters point was that NCAA rules don’t differentiate between walk-on and preferred walk-on. In fact, I can assure you that the number of walk-ons who aren’t recruited and assured of a spot on the team in advance is exceedingly small. Especially at the Power 5 level. So by that definition, they’re all ‘preferred walk-ons’.

I thought she signed some sort of "preferred walk-on" agreement (as I'm pretty sure I've seen that done in college football).

I can't speak for Heinrich. But walkons, preferred walkons can "sign" cause it makes them feel good (Gabriel's below)
A friend of mine's daughter got an offer to play for UT Dallas, which is Div III and definitely does not offer scholarships for sports. She had a signing ceremony in her high school along with other players at her school. Because it's fun to have that attention.
[Okay, maybe I'm getting into the weeds here. The point is walkons that make the team get treated identical except when it comes to $$$]

It’s often a fake, meaningless document that allows non-scholarship athletes to participate in their high school’s signing day ceremonies. For the university release, it’s normal for coaches to not want to advertise who is/isn’t on scholarship so they all will just say ‘Signed’. Technically, for her to be announced she would’ve had to do something like make a downpayment on her tuition.

That much I do recall.
But, as for Heinrich, Texas included her as part of their official release in November. And, there are quotes included from Coach Elliott about Heinrich. A coach is not allowed to comment on a recruit until/unless they sign with their school. So, she signed something that made her part of Texas' 2020 official recruiting class.
