Penn State's twitter said it is a charter. The airline is Sun Country (SCX8600). It is a 737-800. FlightAwareAgain, who cares? Do you ride around on one of those really loud motorcycles, popping wheels and revving the engine? Well, actually, I care. It's an airplane thing.

I wonder what kind of plane the Huskies will be flying in? Probably one of those awful domestic Boeing death traps instead of a beautiful European Airbus. ;-) If you are telling me an A380 is more beautiful than a 747 you aren't making my Xmas present list. At any rate they are both extremely safe and about the same extremely low crash rate, with Boeing being more reliable because their planes have been up in the air for far longer than anything Airbus has even produced. Funny how Airlines retire Airbus planes way before they retire Boeing planes isn't it?

All commercial air travel (in most of the world, anyway) is extremely safe, no matter who makes the plane.

Texas Chartered to Nebraska so I'm sure they'll charter to Seattle as well.
If I recall the NCAA only reimburses for the cost of a commercial flight. I'm glad all three programs think enough of volleyball to put up the money for a charter. Traveling during finals week is hard enough without having to deal with pre-boarding or connecting flights.

Nope. They are flying commercial. Chatted with one of their players who wasn't happy about that fact.

Elliott said on the Net Live yesterday that Texas was taking a charter. Maybe they decided to go commercial after they found out how much it would cost to replace Mack Brown.

I assume they are flying that. Seems hard to justify a charter when you have a scheduled direct flight available. If there were not enough seats on the direct flight, then I could see arguing for a charter.

It's not enough that you get to go to school for free at a top university, play a sport, travel the nation and the world, have tutors, get cool schwag... you want to fly a charter because the process of flying to to the MFing NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS IS TOO DIFFICULT OR INCONVENIENT? I want to barf when I hear crap like that. The kid that CLEANS MY FRICKIN' HOUSE had finals this week too... we had to adjust the cleaning time for her so she could WORK and TAKE FINALS. And she left me a very gracious note for being accommodating this week. I felt like crap that she couldn't just cancel because SHE NEEDED THE MONEY. Nut up, ladies. You won the genetic lottery, live in a time and place that lets you capitalize on that win, and not recognizing your incredible good fortune is very unbecoming. That is all.

But what about their self-esteem? It's pretty hard to have self-esteem when you are forced to fly commercial.

My first asst job in college volleyball our team was flying to SLO for the Volleyball Monthly tournament. I was 23 yrs old, played mens college volleyball and rode in vans. One of our players started complaining because we wouldn't let them skycap their luggage, and they had to wait in line. I literally wanted to punch her! These kids have it TOO good. Chartered flights, catered meals........ We sat in a van for 7 hrs with 8 other people, ate at Ponderosa, and had an absolute blast. These kids are in country clubs.

(But it's also true that sometimes the most expensive things are the most fun.) True. All depends on how YOU make the situation and how your attitude is. You could have girls who are flying on Air Force 1, but they aren't into it, or just not having fun, compared to girls riding a tour bus with no air condition, but are having a blast while doing so.

One of my favorite men's college volleyball memories took place on a team van ride. A teammate fell asleep, and we spent the next 3.5 hours of the drive maneuvering around the van to pose for obnoxious pictures and try to make this guy look as ridiculous as possible just because he fell asleep. Those pictures made up about 50% of our team's end-of-year photo recap. Poor kid, he'll never fall asleep around people again. Then, when I started working in women's volleyball, I realized just how much better they had it. Not just flights, but awesome trips while on road matches and other events (concerts, sporting events, etc.) So boo freakin hoo Longhorn player. Enjoy your commercial flight and be happy you aren't bussing to Seattle.
