And as Klazk pointed out, if things stay the same on the women's side, Carico-Hochevar (#3 qualifier seed) will have to play Juliana (#19 qualifier seed) to make it into the main draw. I assume that the points from the previous week's tournament (Fuzhou) do not get factored into the seeding in Shanghai. When does those points start counting for seeding?

According to regulations, entry points (for main draw versus qualifier) are determined 21 days before an event starts. Points for seeding are determined on the date of the technical meeting. They appear to be following this - if you look at the men's qualification, there are teams with less entry points seeded higher (i.e. Stiekema/Varenhorst) because of their finishes in Fuzhou.
So Carico/Hochevar are probably safe because of Juliana/Antonelli's points from Fuzhou. By my calculations, Julianna/Antonelli will be the 11 seed in the qualifier. Leaving Gally/Klug from Argentina as the unlucky ones.
Fopma/Pavlik should get the winner of Grawender/Lundqvist from Sweeden and Bloem/Wesselink from Netherlands.
Carico/Hughes should get winner of Hansel/Zass from Austria and Arvaniti/Karagkouni from Greece.

You always set us straight Klazk. Logical way for the FIVB to do it.

Thanks also klazk....NOW, watching FIVB from the US is a nightmare...I kinna gave up a year ago (tough always trying to "beat a path" to the better mousetrap (live FIVB US feed)7, if you will). SO, have things changed and should I just go to the FIVB site and Click on the match if I have the right time? OR...? Would love to watch some of these matches so we don't have to post our opinion on someone's chances/future based on a ARTICLE we read! Thanks!

I'm in Shanghai, and going to try to head down on Friday, although the venue is very far from city center. Will let you know if I see anything good.

Nick & Ryan defeat Tri & John Bourne-Hyden USA [20] Doherty-Lucena USA [4] 1-2 (18-21, 21-16, 13-15)
This is a good win for Nick and (especially)Ryan, Bourne & Hyden have played a bit more so far this year and of course were together all last year.
For Ryan getting a win in pool play 1st match will take the pressure off him right away. Last year, he and Todd went a couple tournaments before Ryan settled in.

And it looks like Hyden/Bourne got the lucky loser spot out of the qualifier. So US has 4 teams in after all.

Apparently the FIVB Photog. doesn't know the difference between American players. All the photos are labeled wrong. "Nicholas Lucena of USA blocks the ball from Tri Bourne of the United States"
