Anyone know why Hochevar / Carico withdrew? Seems like they were on the Qualifier list right up to the last second.

SummerDay drew a hard pool. Pool e is going to be tough. Wonder how much pep Juliana/Antonelli will have after competing in the qualification round after playing all the way to the finals the last tourney? Should be interesting.

Good to see Summer/Day won the match they should win in their pool. They have Juliana late tonight. I'm wondering if being referred to as "Summer-Day" is on purpose or just a weird FIVB quirk in identification. I like it.
If anyone sees this right away, Gibb/Patterson's match with Chen-Li starts in 10 minutes - 7:30 PDT and should be streaming on court 1. I'm gonna give Laola1/TunnelBear from Canada a shot to watch it.

Tunnelbear worked great for me. Evandro is a monster. Serious setting issues any time he bump sets, and not a great blocker for size and ability, but some of the balls he hit were astounding, like Phil on an open net kind of hits. They lost the games I watched 17 and 16 though.
Good to see three American teams get the bye and Sean/Phil posting "we care about these games" kind of scores (including a 6 and an 11).

Summer-Day USA [12] Juliana-Antonelli BRA [28] 0-2 (10-21, 9-21) 0:30
If they are going to be the #2 US team, they need to be better than that.

Thats really embarrassing and more than anything may show those two arent mentally ready to compete at the top level. Its one thing to do it as scrappy underdogs who no one expects to win, but Day/Ross have had time to recognize that they can play at that level and only their mental game is holding them back now. Hopefully this is just a one off fluke

Phil & Sean will draw Alison & Bruno in the 3rd round again if they both get there.

If Hyden/Bourne can get one more victory and get at least a 5th, it could make the race for the 4th US Men's team by the Moscow grand slam really interesting between them and Rogers/Brunner.

"Due to logistics, USAV cannot hold playoffs for the FIVB Grand Slams following Shanghai. At that point, the U.S. team that is fourth in points will be entered. Teams can gain points at FIVB Open and NORCECA Circuit tournaments." Both teams are entered in the Puerto Vallarta Open next weekend. At least they'll both be competing for it.

Can someone explain how they determine the "Lucky Loser"? Bourne/Hyden were the lowest Q seeds to lose. The only thing I could find in the regulations to explain it is that none of the higher seeds must have attended the technical meeting for the main draw. The rules say: The extra team(s) with the highest seed in the Qualification Tournament among the teams failing to qualify to the Main Draw Tournament by losing the last round of the Qualification Tournament, provided they attend the Technical Meeting of the Main Draw Tournament, shall qualify to the “Lucky Loser” Draw. A “Lucky Loser” Draw procedure is implemented by the FIVB Technical Supervisor. The FIVB Technical supervisor must draw between the two highest seeded teams among the eligible “Lucky Losers”. For each additional available spot from the Qualification Tournament to the Main Draw Tournament, the next highest seeded team must be drawn against the loser of the previous draw. This procedure continues until all additional open spots are filled. Ya, you actually have to be in the meeting. I've seen some teams play some pretty sneaky moves on others to get them away from the lucky losers draws. I was at an event a couple years ago, and one of my friends made the main draw via a lucky losers draw. They barely got it though because one team (who also lost their 2nd round qualification match) asked them out to dinner blocks away from the main draw hotel at the time of the lucky losers meeting. Luckily, we were all out with dinner with the team that withdrew, so they gave them a heads up. It was their first FIVB event and they thought this other team was welcoming them to the tour.

Something like 17 and 18 sure, but 10 and 9? Basically Summer Day put away less than half of the serves they received. I dont know if there is a player I would more like to see win an FIVB than John Hyden

I think Phil/Sean and Tri/John both have pretty easy brackets up to the quarters. I'm going to precict a Phil/Sean win based on their actually trying this week.
