So Gibb/Patterson get Saxton/Schalk at 9th. Didn't they train most of the preseason together?

@fivbworldtour just tweeted a picture, with the following: Australia's Issac Kapa (R) tries to spike the ball past Qatar's Tiago Santos during Round 1 play at the #ShanghaiGS. "Qatar's Tiago Santos." I thought that kind of thing only happened in athletics. Ah, I see I'm on-topic.

Spent a gorgeous day on a crappy Shanghai beach. But the volleyball was lovely. Saw Walsh-Ross put away Mengarri and Orsi of ITA. Also saw Dalhausser and Rosie playing a Dutch team I think.

Watched Phil/Rosie lose to the Italian team earlier today. Sean had one of his little breakdowns and suddenly struggled to sideout.
One thing I've noticed is that quite a few teams (Sean/Phil as well) now set the ball way inside, almost in the middle of the court. I wonder why they do that?

I think the inside set creates more options in terms of shots and swings. Bad day for the American men. All four teams crash out and exceot Tri/John, all probably would have been betting favorites in their matches.

A big win in the first round for SummerDay taking out the young China team of Xue/Xia.

Thats really embarrassing and more than anything may show those two arent mentally ready to compete at the top level. Its one thing to do it as scrappy underdogs who no one expects to win, but Day/Ross have had time to recognize that they can play at that level and only their mental game is holding them back now. Hopefully this is just a one off fluke I'll give them a pass on this, this was their 1st tough match this year. The Brazilians have been playing all winter on their Domestic tour. It looks like one of us was absolutely right. Great win for Day/Ross over a very strong Chinese team

Opens up different areas of the court and makes the blocker have to think more about where to line up or what to jump into when he or she blocks. Phil and Todd did this for a long time, and sometimes other teams do it either regularly or if the pass drifts to one side they might just set over the middle keep things in front easy and close.

Kerri/April are playing well today, Kerri is still on a blocking tear. Anything that falls is only off speed when April doesn't get to it or one of them still moving their feet when trying to dig the ball, when the blocker pulls off the net.

I expect Kerri and April to dominate as many of the best teams have had players leave and be replaced by new younger players. Although it was a good win vs Brazil today as they have been together for some time now. I think Juliana and Ant of Brazil having to play so many matches may take a little out of them till they get high enough to get out of the qualies. WalRoss got to strike while the irons hot because later in the year it will get harder and by next year it will be tougher. I guess it is up to them to try and get Gold for the USA since once again they are all that is left.

They are playing the other Brasilian team down 13-8 in set one. They are playing Ross and Walsh very well right now.

21-19 Bra set 1. Kerri getting blocked some, not used to seeing that. It's VERY windy though. Thought they were gunna blink at the end though and give up set 1 but they pulled it out. By the way they served Kerri mostly.
