Wouldn't be surprised if Todd Lowery at Brownsville gets the job. He deserves it. [/quote He certainly has earned it, but I hope he realizes how much his recruiting patterns are going to have to change if he does jump. UTPA and UT-Brownsville are essentially combining to become UT-Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV). It was announced earlier that UTB was folding it's program after this year, because of the move to UTRGV (Anybody lost yet?) - I wondered how this transition would go, if UTRGV would take players (and possibly coaches) from either program to form the new program. Todd would be great, but D1 is different than NAIA - not that he can't coach, just a different set of rules, regulations and players.

The question is how many of his players would be eligible to play NCAA.

I thought that they wanted to succeed? $60-$80k in that conference is the bottom of the barrel. Hell, I'm pretty confident that most first assistants are making that amount in the SEC, if not more. I wouldn't place any expectations on improving the overall VB program with that salary.

Is that good for a major conference? Seems low for an SEC head coach. I wonder how many other schools in the Big 5 conferences have Vb head coaches making this low. Yeah, yeah, it's Miss. St. and people will say how much do they care, and how much will they support, they pour all the money into a couple of high profile sports, etc......but I still think it's low. I know mid major D1 and even some D2 coaches making this. Not saying it's right, wrong, or whatever. Just asking if it seems low.

They should pay more since you have to live in Starkville.

And let's be real, how much more are you going to make off campus in MS?

Assistant Coach Needed at Missouri Southern State University Who: MSSU, enrollment around 5,600, DII, MIAA conference What: Asst. Coach's Position; salary around $28K; full time with benefits When: Position available after Jan. 1, 2015 Where: Joplin, Missouri (Historic Route 66 goes through town, home of one of Bonnie and Clyde's hangouts; lots of new construction on and off campus; 2.5 hours from KC; 3 hours from Oklahoma City; 4 hours from St Louis; 5.5 hours from Dallas; 6 hours from Memphis; 8.5 hours from Chicago) Why: It's DII which means shorter season than DI (you can have a life outside coaching); no travel in airplanes; the MIAA is a tough conference and is comparable to mid-major DI programs; we are on the upswing: most conference wins this year than last 3 years combined; cost of living is pretty low here and $28K can go a long way if you do things right; no club coaching responsibilities (unless desired); this would make a great job for a first-time asst. coach Here are just some of the (unofficial) qualities we're looking for: Someone who won't take this job and life too seriously -- yet still make this program one of the top 4 teams in the conference in 3 years or less; ability to make the head coach and players laugh; ability to make players better people while improving their vb skills; have outside interests and hobbies; over-coachers, yellers and negative-coaching-styled people need not apply. Official ad will soon appear on school's HR website and either the NCAA or AVCA sites. Please contact head coach for further information: napier-j@mssu.edu (417) 625-3043 Ad on HR website: www.mssu.edu/offices/human-resources/athletic-positions.php

Looks like they updated it to 80-100K Must have been reading volleytalk and seeing all the negative posts about such a low salary. IMO, still pretty low for an SEC Head Coach, but at least it's more attractive than the $60-80 range.

And let's be real, how much more are you going to make off campus in MS? On it's face, George Mason and Mississippi State are both paying around $70,000. However, $70,000 in Starkville is equal to $119,905 in Fairfax, Va. Doesn't help them compare to Baylor or the other SEC schools but it's something to consider.

You want a head coach to take a bottom dwelling program in a tough conference out of the bottom and you are paying them how much? You get what you pay for.
