As he mentions McPherson as also being recruited for beach, I wonder if she might be on a beach scholarship, addressing any shortage of indoor scholarships for multiple liberos. (As speculated on earlier in this thread?) The indoor scholarship takes precedence. At UW, the indoor team is the sand team - they don't offer sand scholarships. For schools with separate indoor and sand teams, players on sand scholarships can't play on the indoor team (unless they switch to an indoor scholarship).

Trying hard to only take Cook's actual wording as he compares Niece to Liana at an early age and not let a fan's hope run away with me. No pressure.... That said, she is going to come in with not just a hope of starting, but it looks as though one MB position will likely be hers to lose. That's a lot to put on any freshman. (And not a lot of alternatives for backup)

Unfortunate for developing the sand sport, both teams and players, though I guess I could see the rationale to avoid abuse of nominal sand programs to support extra indoor scholarships. Forcing schools to go either/or will produce either rival teams (USC) or subsidiary sand programs. I would rather see more potential for mixed models, as it is good for the sport to have players do both, but individual will want to emphasize one or the other. I really believe that the UW sand season helped individuals indoor skills (e.g., Courtney's roll shot). Back to the subject though, I would hate to see them get stuck having to choose between filling their first string middle positions and having more than one Lib/DS. I expect that there are other options.

I expect that there are other options. The obvious other options are: 1) Switch Jones back to MB. OPPs would then be DeHoog and Tanner (or just DeHoog, if playing a 5-1). 2) Switch Bajema to MB. OPPs would then be Jones and DeHoog/Tanner. 3) Bring in another MB (transfer or recruit), which would require that one DS/L (Onosko?) be on a 1/0 deal. The first and third options would allow Bajema to redshirt, giving her three years at OH after Schwan and Scambray graduate.

Jones has the experience at MB and still hits and blocks like one. It also avoids retraining an OH as MB, only to change her back in a year (plus the potential redshirt you pointed out). That could be left as a backup in case of injury.

My guess is that Cook is planning on moving Jones back to MB where she played in club (as many have already speculated). Seems like a natural move to me. Probably not as quick as Lianna (who is?) but excellent blocker and can sky for attacks. So option #1 looks best, though you are still playing a freshman at MB. Then you also need to think about what happens if you lose a MB to injury.

She even looks a bit like Sybeldon. Looks a lot more like Bugg than Sybeldon. Said "a bit". Niece is blonde and close to the same height as Sybeldon. Give her a year in the weight room... Bugg is listed at 6' - are they stretching her?

Dude, to me she looks like she could be Bugg's sister. Bugg looks thinner - thus my comment about a year in the weight room. I agree their facial expressions are similar. I repeat, I said she looked "a bit" like Sybeldon (especially wearing purple).
