Actually, I think the team will be strong in 2017. They will have a great cadre of experienced, high level performers at other positions. The level of talent at those other positions will be on a level with many of the best programs in the country, and many of those programs have done well even though LC is not setting them. Don't see why same cannot happen at UW. It will be really sad when Lauren goes, but the setters of the future will not be asked to carry the team as much. Hannah will have experience under LC to burn by that point. Sydney will be just fine as well. Wisconsin will be outstanding in 2017 post Carlini. Their depth chart could be: S-Hilley/Juley OH-Bates/Duello/Loberg/Whalen RS-Fricano MB-Morgan/Williams/Rettke DS/L-McDonald/Saunders/Dodge Hilley is supposed to be a top setter, Bates will be a 4 year starter as a senior, Duello will be an upperclassman after being a top 10 recruit, Loberg/Whalen will be highly ranked, Fricano will be a 5th year senior (and she has all the potential in the world...it hasn't come through yet but she has 3 more years), Morgan/Williams are top middle recruits who will be juniors, Rettke was offered by Penn State and will be a top recruit, McDonald was a HS AA, Saunders is a stronger passer and Dodge is outstanding. The Badgers are going to be VERY very good into the future, even post Carlini. She may be a strong passer, but Saunders is a hitter, not a DS. Probably will be competing with Frick for time at RS. You are probably confusing her with Smith, a new DS coming in 2015 who you missed. You also forgot about Sarah Dodd, a DS from Kenosha, who's verballed for 2016 along with ME Dodge. And BTW, the other 2015 DS is MacDonald, like the farm, not McDonald, like the fast food chain. Question: Do we know that Penn State actually offered Rettke, or was she just interested in them? I know she has talent and potential, but I am always skeptical when people start trotting out other schools that the recruit "turned down" because we sometimes later learn that there was not actually ever an offer on the table.

There was a local article linked when report of her verbal became public. It listed schools that were interested in her for basketball and volleyball, but how do you ever really know about offers or not since at such a young age its all just verbal anyhow. Ironically, that article didn't mention Wisconsin, but I'm guessing Shef didn't just have a few beers after the Nebraska win & decide to offer the tallest kid in the Field House at the time:)
Shef does seem to have the quickest draw in the BIG with all 4 of the 2017 class committed by Nov. 2014. Curious if he keeps that M.O. going forward. Haven't seen any 2018 Bongo's yet.

I'm newer to early recruiting so on average do early verbals stick (aside from coaching changes)? I mean these are young kids and a lot happens in three years.

There was no reason? K. You're the expert. There is no reason. Im almost positive they were ALL ranked in the top 100 of the senior aces, and most in the top 50. They had all the talent in the world. They should of done better than their record. Im sure there was behind the scenes issues, but purely talent wise, they had plenty of it They play in the BIg Ten. 7 teams have the same recruiting class, with NE and PSU being that much better. You have to do more with a team than just put it on the court to be successful in a very competitive league.

If you watch football signing day on ESPN you would think it's a war til the NLI is signed, but I don't think VB works that way. Judging from this 2015 group it seems that most verbals are honored on both sides as most of that class was committed well before signing day & they all came thru despite a coaching change.
I think that after the last 2 years Wisconsin is even more of a destination/ dream school for top recruits. I would not be surprised if the 2018 class is slower to be offered than 2017. Think of the benefit of having an open scholarship spot in December should let's say.....an AA from LSU suddenly wants to experience her last 2 years of school in the snow!

If you check out the team website, Annemarie Hickey is now listed as the Volunteer Assistant Coach. Looks like she elected to stick around and get another year of experience under the mentorship of Sheff & Co before striking out in search of a coaching job.

Regarding a fast trigger, the Badgers have at least 13 players committed to play at Wisconsin who are still a minimum of 5 months away from beginning college.

I don't understand. Who commits <5 months away from beginning of college?
Most of those 13 are coming in next year and had to sign NLIs in November. That doesn't seem very unusual.

I saw McDonald play at Bluegrass. It was a battle of the liberos with Kenzie Maloney (but plays outside for club), Molly Sauer, and Amber playing each other. Amber was so fun to watch her play. She's a scrappy player that gets up so many balls.

Hilley, who is a 2017, will likely be the best setter to come out of the state of MN in a long time. Badgers got a good one. We would like to thank you again for taking SSS! That's the irratating thing to me. Gophers have Handley and Shau for two more seasons. Both are capable setters with experience. MN could of had them set the next two seasons and then had Hilley come in for four years. But now with SSS, we have too many setters. I'm sure SSS will end up being really good, and she already has set many of the current gopher players in JO. I just think Hilley will end up being better in the long run. Oh well, I at least we get to see her play for our neighbors.

However, in three years she will be the competition.

So you're suggesting Hugh become some sort of setter hoarder?

So you're suggesting Hugh become some sort of setter hoarder? He kind of is, lol. There's 4 setters on the spring roster. Anyway, I'm just suggesting the gophers would have been better off getting Hilley, not SSS. Timing-wise, it would have worked out better.

Well, we fell behind in our race to PSU thread pages. What else is new?
Practice started yesterday. Romana with no knee brace and dressed; I don't see everyone, but I think it's only 7, correct?
