I believe everyone got in at some point except Thrower, who was in sweats on the sideline. I had her pegged for a RS this year so that's not that surprising. Played 4 sets, mixing up lineups (had a male practice player as a front row OH for most of the day on the yellow team). Middle: Onye was at middle all day and dominant (also served all day and had a few aces). The other two switched between playing full time on the other side or across from her. Tvrdy is really quick and had moments, but Neal looked great and was impactful both ways with her size. She looked healthy and was much quicker running the slide than we saw from her in prior years. I'd favor Neal just based on today but I suspect both will get time over the season. Setter: Both setters looked good - each won 2 sets (I think). Cline still has a great connection with the middles, but she was markedly improved from the spring with accuracy to the pins. Her net presence just really opens things up in 2-hitter rotations. Purashaj is strong location-wise, very consistent, but not as physical. Funky serve that causes problems, digs a lot of balls, and she's better out of system. Bumpsets are crazy accurate. Despite being a Cline stan, I thought Purashaj was slightly ahead but that may just be because her side won the last set and I'm giving credit that she just met all these hitters a couple weeks ago. Obviously a small sample size and two weeks of practice could change things. Greek setter didn't set but has a really nasty serve, I think she's got the serving sub spot on lock if today wasn't a wild outlier. I do wonder when's the last time a Top 25 team ran a 5-2 - that may actually be something we pull out, and if not I would expect some liberal front row/back row setter substitutions. Morris looks locked in at libero, she covers a lot of ground in the back and digs a lot. Setting second ball is a strength. Gregoire got some time on both pins - could see her being first off the bench at two spots if one on the OHs struggle passing or if Glover struggles hitting. In a different context, she might be competing for OPP, but I'm not sure we can afford to not have a viable back-up OH available. I think we'll have a solid 4-woman serve receive unit, but passing looked a little shaky needing to find 6-8 passers to play six-on-six.

Good to hear of the other setters and how they can contribute. Neal getting the nod to start would make sense, but yeah likely Tvrdy sees the court too. Yeah, serve receive issues in the scrimmage would make sense. Is the backup OPP an option for Gould, or not quite ready for that option I wonder. Yeah, Gregoire will definitely see the court this year at times it would seem.

Thanks for the in depth rundown c4ndlelightHow did Ohwobete look? Do you think she can make the adjustment from mid major to P4?

Yes. Ohwobetre may be a bit on the shorter side but she is physical enough to hit and block very effectively in a power conference. Had some highlight hits and service runs too. I see her playing 6 rotations for us (and most other teams too… - I think that is usually true of the Big West POY)

Yeah, Gregoire will definitely see the court this year at times it would seem. With the caveat of a small sample size because Gould didn't get that many swings, I would slot Gregoire there. While they're both a bit undersized for the position, Gregoire has bigger hops and does have a heavier arm (plus, she can contribute with ball control).

The scrimmage yesterday was fun! I agree with c4ndlelight and their assessments. I was prepared to be blown away by Onye (and I was) but I was also very impressed with Colby and her blocks and speed. Mia also seems quick and blocked well, especially next to Glover; they had a couple of shut down blocks together.
I love Purashaj’s short serve to zone 2; she served five or six in a row there including 2 (3?) aces.
Can’t wait for the first match against Pitt! My guess for a starting lineup would be:
OH: Colyer & Ohwebete MB: Onye & Neal (serving sub for Neal - Evelina?) S: Cline OPP: Glover (Daley to serve/DS) L: Morris
I think there’s a good chance to see Purashaj, Tvrdy and Gregoire if the starting lineup doesn’t work. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Gregoire at OPP or OH at times, depending on who struggles.

Can someone on this thread give me their take on Morris in comparison to Murphy from last season? I don’t have nearly enough time watching Morris to make a super strong comparison, but from what I saw in the scrimmage last week, she’s a solid passer and a great defender who covers a lot of court. She covers her hitters really well and her OOS bump sets are pretty accurate. I don’t recall seeing her serve, so I have no idea about that. (I think they were just giving everyone a chance to play so likely she’ll serve in matches.) Murphy was a great passer and a solid defender. I think she brought a lot of leadership to the court and really shored up the passing unit. She spent a lot of her UO career passing just her and one outside (either Brooke or Gabby) and she can cover a lot of court in serve receive. I’m excited about Morris and think she can really add to the team, even with big shoes to fill.

Is anyone going to be in Corvallis to watch the exhibition match against OSU?
