I love musicals on film but not musicals on stage. They're very pricey and held far far away, e.g., San Francisco, San Jose. The parking situation is not ideal. Once in a while, local community theaters hold musicals but they generally suck because the talent pool is, well, lacking in the talent department. On the other hand, I went to see a local community production of The Sound of Music a few years ago and while everyone in the cast sucked, one guy really stood out and you could tell he was talented and had the "it" factor. After all these years, I still remember that guy (but not his name) while I forgot almost everything else about that musical that evening.
In the past 20 years, I've seen three musicals -- Beach Blanket Babylon (San Francisco), The Lion King (San Francisco), and The Sound of Music (local community production).
Before that, I've seen Victor Victoria (New York, NY) (w/ Julie Andrews!), Cats! (New York, NY), Children of a Lesser God (Washington, DC), and Rashomon (Honolulu, HI), and a few others I can't remember. The last two were not musicals but dramas.
In Las Vegas, I've seen a couple of magic shows (e.g., Lance Burton), David Cassidy's show, and some others I've forgotten.

Other than Lion King, your choices weren’t great. I am the biggest SofMusic fan alive, but didn’t like the stage version at all. Agree, it ain’t cheap, and driving to San Francisco is a nightmare. Do you like Carole King? If so, I’d recommend Beautiful. I think youd like it. Worth the drive and money, IMO. Also my husband liked it, and I had to drag him there kicking and screaming. Seeing it again Friday night, btw.

It's basically a bunch of talented peeps singing and dancing for, I think, 90 minutes to a variety of songs w/ revised lyrics (to make them funnier). It's basically an excuse to sing and dance well known songs. For the most part, we won't go see musicals because it's too much of a time and money investment. You have to set aside an entire evening, plus the hassles of driving, parking, and making dinner arrangements. A lot of inconveniences. Also, it's time we won't get to spend with our doggy, who'll be at home alone. When we had kids at home back in the day, we would've had to find babysitters. If they went with us, it would've been a nightmare trying to herd them around the city. Ugh...

Be aware that each actor plays 2-4 parts. I finally caught on about 10 minutes in 🤪. It’s such a great show. Bring some tissues. 2020-2021 season has been announced
summer: the donna summer musical, september 2020 charlie and the chocolate factory, december 2020 tootsie, january 2021 harper lee's to kill a mockingbird, february 2021 mean girls, march 2021 hades town, june 2021
and....
wicked, april - may 2021...have to renew my season tickets to get a crack at these tickets
Wicked might be the best musical I've ever seen. IDK how different the touring set and effects are from the one in the Gershwin in NYC but the technical stuff alone makes it worth seeing, not to mention the whole musical part of the show.

I used to go to a fair number of musicals in high school, mostly to see how my classmates performed. I was pleasantly surprised how talented many of them were. The student body president was in choir and did all the musicals. He was good looking, charming, reasonably bright (didn't take all the AP classes except for AP English), generally nice, had a kick-ass singing voice, and had a stage presence. But a lot of my talented classmates ended up doing something more practical with their lives like go into real estate, which is what that student body president ended up doing after college. To his credit, he was reasonably successful.

Well, I finally watched Les Mis last night. The movie, not a live production. As a fan of musicals (and an occasional contributor to this thread) it really was a glaring absence from my list. I really enjoyed it and would love to see it live. It's very clearly technically outstanding, but I don't think it's one that I will listen to on "repeat" the way I have with some others over the years. In any event, I'm glad that I've now seen it.

Russell Crowe was 👎, but holy cow, Anne Hathaway was amazing. On stage it is quite a spectacle. But I thought the movie was pretty good. Everything should see it live, IMO!
