He better get to the gold medal game. And if he coaches the team to a gold medal, he will be hailed by all and the Destinee detractors can gloat for infinity! But if the team falls short / disappoints and there is an belief he did not have the most talented players on his team, he will be back to being a tv announcer and whatever else he does. It's not only about winning but having the best hitter in American history on the team. It's an extreme disappointment for the sport and fans.

I know she's in her early-mid 30s. Was she ever a contender to play in the Olympics? I see updates on her, and I think she played in the Pan American Cup or something with the USA this past summer.

I never saw the "Classics" interview on this match before. Start at 55:00 on the touch call on Karch and Stokie says in the interview he heard the touch right after Karch said he didn't. Gotta love Stokie for the needle and Karch's face turns bright red, he can't even handle a friendly joke! There are always going to be challenging / difficult players - that is not unusual with high level talented players. The great coaches know how to handle these players.
This is hindsight at its best. Many we think of as "great coaches" ccouldnt negotiate problem players. Doug Beal for example, who won the first gold medal for the US only did so after driving some great, great players off the team (Sinjin and Hovland notably). He didnt know how to handle these players. Fred Sturm, who I dont know if you would call a great coach, but he did win a medal, drove Craig Buck off the team with his coaching. Belichick couldnt handle Randy Moss in the long term, Pat Riley lost his team in Miami because he alienated the players, Phil Jackson won fewer titles with the Lakers than he should have, Greg Popovich failed in his first stint. The deification of coaches is one of the most annoying facets of modern sports. All coaches struggle with problem players. Some do better and some do worse but acting as if there are coaches who can coach anyone effectively simply isnt true.

While there is this perception that the current players dont like Hooker or dont want to play with her, from the players I have talked to, that really isnt the sentiment. They want to win, and recognize how much she can help make that happen. In terms of her behavior, tweets etc..... I think they see it more as Destinee being Destinee, than they see it as bad teammate.

Her behavior when she first joined the National Team compared to her behavior in 2012, or even her behavior now, is a night and day difference. She was young, a little cocky, and needed to grow up a little bit. Nothing wrong with that. I think she has made changes. Then again, that has nothing to do with the issues between her and Karch now.

At the end of the day stubbornness will most likely be the thing that keeps it from happening. It would take her reaching out and saying "I handled things poorly, thats on me, I want to play" or Karch saying "I should have handled the situation better, thats on me" I don't see either happening. Aren't they both adults? If I am Doug Beal, I am on a plane meeting with Hooker, I am in the offices meeting with Karch. He should be the person that brings it together, I think that is his job.
