Bown should've been on the roster but not in place of Harmotto. Everyone choked in the gold medal match aside from Logan. Harmotto was lights out and by far our best blocker the whole year leading up to the Games. Bown should've went in place of Scott-Arruda. Just like Metcalf should've went in place of Haneef-Park. The double sub was unnecessary.
Hugh over-thought the roster. Just take the best 12 (given position allocation).

Timely discussion. On point for this thread.

THey probably consulted Tyra Banks and she said she gave it a 10 if this is ANTM hence FIVB went ahead and used the pic

I think Hugh made a tough choice with Bown v Harmotto (I personally would've chosen Bown), but IMHO Glass wasn't as good then as she is now. Either way I think Karch has a good problem on his hands with all of our players are competing for the 12 spots in Rio. it was not a tough choice. it was stupid. Harmotto was not even in the picture a year out but somehow Hugh picked her over Bown. Go back and check the GP roster in 2011 and 2012, Harmotto was riding the bench. It was so stupid. Glass was playing great too, much better than Thompson plus the way Hugh ran the double sub, 1 shot and you are out, the setter CT was not a factor so selecting Glass would have made perfect sense in case Berg got hurt or not playing well. Hey personal feelings sometimes got in the way, you know... Right. One shot and you are out. What a stupid idea. Just rewrite the rules for cripesakes!

Really disappointed by the sparse crowd in Omaha. The FIVB stat sheets showed the attendance at 5,100. They must have counted everyone twice.
This tournament should have been held in Southern California, in a smaller arena. Every USA match in So. Cal. has drawn good crowds. If you put this tournament at the Pyramid or Bren Center, it would have been full and the arena would have been rockin'. Even Galen Center, with 10,000 seats would have been a much better environment.
Southern California's large population of Chinese, Japanese and Russians would also have increased the crowds. And, it would have been a much more attractive destination for the Brazilian fans to travel to. Brazilian fans usually travel everywhere. How many are in Omaha? Maybe even Lang Ping would have thought it was worth the trip.
All this talk about how Nebraskans love volleyball? What Nebraskans love are the Huskers.

I too was and am disappointed by the crowds but this event was very poorly advertised and marketed to people here. NOTHING on television until news media picked up Team USA arriving, no ads, nothing significant. Whomever was in charge of marketing this event really dropped the ball because a lot of people really had NO idea this was going on.

I thought one of the primary drivers of going to Omaha is because the city, and its people, really get behind events like this. The same way they do with the College World Series, the Olympic Swimming trials and Warren Buffett's shareholder meetings. O.k. just kidding about the Warren Buffett thing.

One big change I see in this group over the last 1-2 years, they are SO MUCH BETTER at picking up tips. Teams used to score so many point on us by tipping..... not so much anymore.

This may be true, but I can give Nebraskans 3 reasons to turn out for this event: Kelsey Robinson, Kayla Barnwath, and Jordan Larson.

You'll see an uptick for the matches, and especially US matches from Friday through Sunday. More people off work coinciding with more people being made aware it's actually going on. Not sure what that will mean in total attendance though.

I think maybe they should have put the US matches in between the two other matches. That could have encouraged people to either show up early or stay later for the other matches, and maybe increase overall attendance. Just food for thought.

World Grand Prix Day 1 Attendance figures... YEAR | Host (Capacity) | Match 1 | Match 2 | Match 3 | 2015 | Omaha (18,320) | 2,500 | 3,600 | 5,105 | 2014 | Toykyo (10,000) | 1,000 | 1,800 | 7,000 | 2013 | Sapporo (8,000) | 1,200 | 1,900 | 4,000 | 2012 | Ningbo (8,000) | 3,000 | 2,000 | 6,500 |
No clue how much we or the other countries inflated those numbers, but there it is.

Sorry if someone else has already mentioned this--busy enjoying the matches yesterday rather than reading VT--but I find the short clip of music played between every point quite annoying. I have no problem with the music during timeouts and challenges, and I don't mind the guy who is doing a Ryan Seacrest imitation to try to entertain the fans. But the 10-second or so recorded music blast between the whistle ending one point and starting the next disrupts the game flow for me. I guess I can understand why they do it when there are not many fans, but with a lot of fans it actually kinda interferes being part of a crowd.
Overall though, it is blast to watch the matches and I feel very fortunate to be able to attend in person.

Haha, I thought the same thing...Hearing Frozen's "Let it Go" after being roofed is just problematic for me.
