"Ross/Pavlik forfeit their last pool match. Injury? Already eliminated and decided to get out of Dodge early?" They called off play yesterday at around 5:30 because of lightning strikes - apparently they are really paranoid (and rightfully so) about people getting lit up around here because St. Pete is like the lightning strike capital of the world (according to one of the security dudes), and they never started back up Friday - they decided to just start early Saturday, so April booked. All the US fans that came to see her must have really appreciated that. Grow the game!

Ross/Pavlik not playing the final match shouldn't surprise anyone. If they hadn't forfeited, I would bet that the other team would have come up with a mysterious ailment and claimed a medical forfeit.
I'd have to go back and check, but I'm not sure there has been a pool play match actually played this year in the circumstance they were in (i.e. they had no shot to advance and opponent had already clinched 1st in the pool).
One of many reasons I'm not a fan of pool play.

So Brazil takes 1, 2 and 3. If Kerri don't come back we have no shot. Maybe kessy back with April if something happens to Kerri again. After all she is getting old

After watching this weekend, I just don't think the American women (with a few exceptions) are as athletically gifted as te Brazilians and some of the others. I also don't think the big blocker approach is all that effective in the women's game. I believe the two best American teams are also the most athletic women (Walsh/Ross and Kessy/Day). I think the makeup of those two teams is the closest we have to that of the Brazilian teams. Fendrick - slow, not the most mobile or explosive, and just doesn't block enough balls to make a difference. She looks injured too. Sweat - not playing the same defense she has in the past few years Fopma - slow, not real athletic. Branagh - looks like it hurts her to walk. And perhaps because she is old DiCello - see the other blockers above I do hope the new teams make a difference. I am hopeful of the Carico/Summer duo. I just think the state of the women's game is better off with some decent sized, athletic, and offensive teams that will be scrappy playing defense. I just don't like the big blocker concept for them.

Brazilians sweep on American soil! Not good! Not good! Not good! Please hurry back Kerri! You & April are the only chance we've got in Rio unless Misty returns and picks up someone decent and makes a run!!!!

Golden Girl 3 Misty is not coming back and she should not. This losing streak may be what the USA team needs. We should not put all our eggs in one basket. We need younger teams to step up and start playing better. If Misty does come back I would like to see her coach up a young upcoming team. Misty has always been my fave but she has had so many injuries over the years I do not think her body would hold up. It should not have to. We should be growing the younger generation into competing form.Maybe Walross and Jen and Em squeak us through this next Olympics but then what? Then Kerri retires and the AVP folds again. We need our younger ladies to step up.

I don't follow the women's beach college game closely. Is there any athletes in the current college beach game that could potentially make an impact in the next year or two or is it all a ways off?

We need our younger ladies to step up. That player doesnt really exist (the young player who will step up) Look at past greats and how long it took them to become successful once they started playing beach. Reno and Kirby dominated in years 2 and 3 respectively. For both Misty and Kerri it was basically instantaneous. April was World Champ her third year. Youngs was fast, Holly was 24 when she started winning (or a year younger than Lane Carico is now) There are a bunch of solid players it took longer (Fontana, Kessey, etc. ) but if we are looking for the next great American player, it likely wont be any of these women. Sunmmer is the best candidate of the bunch and she is still only 22, but, April and Kerri aside, this is the weakest the domestic tour has looked since I can remember and last year Summer made one final. Its hard to imagine a young Liz Masakayan going 0-5 against Lauren and Brooke The idea that younger teams will just develop in the absence of potential is not true. Think about when Youngs or Kerri came out on the beach. You saw them and knew they would win 30 tournaments barring injury or laziness. Watching Masakayan or Jackie Silva on the sand the same thing. Who is like that now

Hey New to Volleytalk love all the beach info here. One of the teams I really used to enjoy watching was Aleksandrs Samoilovs and Jānis Smedins, any reason why they split up?

Friendly note: This probably does not belong in the St. Pete Grand Slam thread. I was not aware that they broke up? They've played 3 events together this year already and are still registered together for World Championships, Gstaad and Yokohama events.

Thanks for heads up, will create new post next time with question. Still figuring out how volleytalk works. I guess after Porec, Stavanger with them playing with different partners and no entry in St. Pete I was curious what happened to them. Glad to see they are still playing together.
