Q brackets are out. anyone know about the McKibben Bros? They been playing much beach? Played against their dad a long time ago. Wasnt one of them on the national team? Yeah, I remember the older McKibben too. I coached against Riley in JRs, but haven't heard much about them in the last 2 years or so.

I coached against Riley in JRs, but haven't heard much about them in the last 2 years or so. Maddison was considered an up-and-coming star as a junior player, but he never really seemed all that interested in the sport. I think (not 100% sure) I heard that both he and Riley live in the New York area and decided to enter the tournament since it was close by.

Are you thinking of Owen, their uncle? I don't remember their dad playing, but on the other hand I can't remember where my car keys are.

I thought I had heard that Owen had a kid who was an up and comer, must have been mistaken.

The lack of Men's teams in the Q from Florida should be troubling for the AVP.
I'm afraid they are losing that state. over at the NVL, of their 16 top ranked teams, there are 16 players from Florida.
Not saying how much the FL players will be missed in NYC, but this is a head to head choice. I know some of the NVL players can't play on the AVP, but this maybe a trend.

I think the AVP should be worried in a lot of respects. With the exception of the on court product, the NVL is superior in a lot of ways. They make it very easy for hardcore fans, like us here, to follow them live. Second video of their past events is on the website and easily available. The NVL goes to cities the AVP does not, but that are traditional volleyball places. Hermosa and Milwaukee spring to mind. Why can the NVL run Hermosa but not AVP? Likewise Milwaukee? The NVL isnt really a threat yet, but its inching closer. Ill watch both this weekend and I am more interested in the AVP because the players are superior, but if form holds I bet I end up watching a lot of NVL because their stream will work and be clear

The small-draw tournament format leaves the AVP in danger of becoming the Harlem Globetrotters of beach volleyball. If mid-ranked players have no real assurance of playing in the main draw so they can break even on the trip, they're discouraged from going. Worse, it's made a day longer by their having to play in a qualifier, which in itself is a downer for someone who knows they would be in the Main Draw of a normally-sized tournament.
Sooner or later they get squeezed out. Of course, any new talent has to grow its way up through that very group in order to reach the upper echelon. So, tournaments get thin on talent and fans lose interest as the competition boils down to a few aging top-dogs against, well, the Washington Generals of the local beach scene.
Sounds pretty dismal to me.

McKibbens get in over Burik/Toppel. Huge upset based on earlier results this year.

When was the last time the AVP was so weak on the women's side? Dicello and Van Zwieten are the 3 seed? In the 1990s when half the tour left for the AVP, the tour was stronger.
A few years ago it seemed like there were a lot of teams coming up, but now it just looks dead.
