Saw a forward post that the Crabb brothers were going to release a "life changing" announcement Wednesday. Anybody have the scoop? Prob a sponsor pick up like red bull or something...if I had to guess but curious...

Well, the "life changing" announcement was a GoFund Us promotion re: please send us $20k so we can travel the world and chase our 2020 Olympic dreams. I guess if someone gave me $20k as my vball budget, it would be life changing. They have already raised $1,500. Fora $500 donation, you get a molten ball, spectre sunglasses and dedicated Crabb Bros. picture...lol..seems like a pretty good idea for family and friends who have grown up around you and less of a good idea for general fans of the game... I am perhaps being too cyncical - maybe this is a great idea and a potential way for vball athletes to be able to focus on the sport more and provide us (the fans) a better product. Would be interested to hear what others think about this concept? us.sponsorise.me/en/project-crabb-brothers

I see it as a little distasteful also, but it seems to be working.

Are they going to refund people's money if they end up being a top 4 team and USAV starts paying for that stuff?
I guess it is unlikely that they would get to that status within the next year or so.

The GoFundMe stuff has gotten ridiculous. You want $20,000? Take six months off and work construction and save. The only people that should be raising money are those with out of nowhere debt due to tragic illness or injury.

Why dont they just get part time jobs? The two of them working 10 hours a week each, which surely they could fit into their schedule, would do significantly better than $20,000 in a year.

So who else will sponsor them besides us? The Brazilian Federation? I think this is great and a good start at getting fans more involved with the players they like. Others have done this and I was glad to toss a few bucks there way in a sport with little US funding. I mean, its not even the price for a good seat at a baseball game & they showed us LOTS in Huntington for example....

...now I went to donate and, if I come up with $10K, they'll tatoo my company (I don't have one) logo ? Can someone explain how THAT works? :-(

I think there should be a better system in place to determine which 4 teams should be funded, but the US spends plenty on BVB. What is it that merits more? If I were choosing which players to fund, I would probably choose at least Trevor of the 8, based on potential, but this isnt something they have earned in any way. Their best finish is 3rd and every team funded ahead of them has won on the AVP. They have beaten one too team ever.

Who is paying $20 an hour for part time work for them to get to $10,00 each? Depending on where they live in the offseason, a lot of private schools pay between $45-$75 per hour for adults running after school clubs. (Not necessarily volleyball) Some waiters make that, depending on the restaurant. (but they could put in a lot more than ten hours if they wanted to wait tables) Working as trainers seems a natural fit. Its been a long time since I worked construction but I was getting close to that with minimal skill 20 years ago. But lets say it was impossible though and each had to put in 15 hours a week? Why is that an unreasonable thing to ask? The more I think about this, the more obnoxious it seems. Two wealthy kids are too good to put in 45 hours a week to live their dream. If they reach their goal will they be staying in nights to save money? Doesn't do much to alter the prevailing, and 100% correct, view that BVB players are generally spoiled brats.

Playing devil's advocate here as I know nothing of their personal situation - if their part time job is to fund their travel and entry fees, what money are they supposed to live on? How do you know they don't already have part-time jobs and that is what is buying them food, clothing and shelter?

The Bomgrens each have fulltime careers. As does Stafford Slick. Yet they get in their training and pay their own way. I'm sure there are several other examples. John Mayer is a top player and he coaches at a division one school. One could definitely argue, especially with Brian and Tim, that it has hurt their volley careers. But it does show that finding some work to fund your playing and pay for your life isn't really that difficult.

All due respect, training and paying your own way for 7 AVP events in the continental United States while working full time is completely different than the international schedule required to legitimately hope to have enough points to qualify for the 2020 Olympics.
