Reese Messer and Abigail Mullen did an interview with VB Adrenaline today, here’s the rundown:
-Reese will be enrolling in May. (Not surprising, she wants to play her last season of basketball, also picked up T&F last year.) She’ll still be playing for Dynasty this spring. -Mullen will be enrolling in January. -Messer wants to run a fast offense, it’s part of the reason she picked USC actually. Says Gail is super easy to set, she can just hang it up there for her. -They committed to USC separately, Reese didn’t know Gail was interested. -Gail went for USC after meeting Brad at a qualifier, she did know Reese was looking at it, after all her visits she was sold on USC. -Lol, part of Brad’s recruitment sell to Reese was showing her all the arms she’d get to be setting (Livings, Tealer, and Favor specifically) -Reese is super humble, girl is practically the #1 setting recruit and won’t even admit she’s good lol. -Abigail is excited to wreck play in the B1G, she believes Brad’s idea that USC can be a top 5 team if all the puzzle pieces fit. Podraza agrees. -The 25 and 26 classes have played with/against each other at camps and it was very high level. Going to be a very competitive practice gym for several years. -Reese said she’s most excited to set Jadyn and Favor next year. Said both are really high flyers.
Brad was also interviewed separately:
-He is big on not just recruiting athletes, he goes after people. -Brad was happy to talk about Reese, but also made sure to give Allie Hazelwood her flowers and doesn’t plan on declaring Reese as the starter yet. -He says Reese and Jadyn are similar talent-wise. Both haven’t been apart of team USA growing up but he can see it for them down the road. -Brad is very high on opposites having an elite line shot as it opens up the rest of the field. One of the reasons he’s so high on Gail. -Says Taylor Deckert is one of the best liberos he’s seen in years, doesn’t care what the recruiting rankings say. -Compliments Quinn Lopers assassin like playing style and ball control. Not sure when, but he can see her having an impact on the program. ( I also agree with the assassin part, she’s pretty crafty.) -Kiffin adds unique value as an undersized hitter. She’ll add different looks to the gym with her style of play. -Says Townsend is completely capable of locking down a backcourt, a very mature and calming player.

Great stuff. Abigail and Reese are sensational human beings and absolutely fierce competitors. And they’ve both played in a ton of big matches in juniors, high school, and for Mullen, national team. They’ll be ready to go. Team to watch.

They can pick up good wins in the B1G.

Agreed, I think an upset there would get them back in on the conversation for sure. (it would certainly get them back in my good graces lol.) Personally, my main concern re:ASU would be the passing mismatch. Hopefully they can take down Wisconsin, but after seeing that prison Smrek had Mruzik in… Smrek put Chicoine from Purdue in that same prison, and I'm sure they will match Anna up with Ally. Our weakness is blocking a good, quick, opposite (see Merritt Beason), so if they get Livings going, it could be a match. How do coaches determine which rotation a team will start in to get better matchups in set one? Is it a roll of the dice like oh they usually start in this rotation so we’ll go with that? Do coaches have to submit like an hour prior etc and then can edit. Sorry this may sound dumb but truly don’t know

KBB at Creighton will sometimes put in 2 backup OHs as starters and burn 2 subs right away to get Martin and Sis in the blocking matchup she wants. Otherwise, it's a give it your best guess and change as the sets go on.

Assuming Wisconsin starts in rotation one with Charlie serving and Smrek front row, SC will likely to start with Grae serving to give Ally 3 rotations vs. Smrek. I don’t trust Adonia not to hit straight into the meat of the block lol. Sheffield could also spin his dial as well, so it’s really a hit or miss.

I’m pretty sure Tyrah is done and I think any 2 of DTN, Verbiest, or Peachy transferring out is likely. Could probably have an impact on some Big West/ WCC programs. As much as I hate to say it, I wouldn’t be shocked to see Keller go after a portal OH as well to fill the #18 slot.

I agree that DTN, Verbeist and Pietsch are all possible transfers out. But if Tyrah is done, can we really go into next year with only 3 middles? Seems we will need another one out of the portal. I would expect Wijay, Tealer, Livings, Adonia and Mullen will provide enough for us on the pins.
