Cosmos posted this article elsewhere, which gives great advice on using VPNs to watch CBC and BBC coverage of the Olympics: www.howtogeek.com/182666/how-to-watch-the-olympics-online-without-a-cable-subscription/Sling TV now carries NBCSN (and NBC*) in their Sling Blue 40+ Channels package ($25/mo): www.sling.com/[* The NBC Channel in Sling TV's Blue Package is only available in select markets: Dallas-Fort Worth, Hartford, Conn., Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, San Diego, Washington D.C. and Philadelphia.] No contract, so you can cancel and switch to the Orange package ($20/mo), which includes ESPN and ESPN2 (when the college season begins). You can get both the Orange and Blue packages ($40/mo). You can also add the Sports Extra ($5/mo), which includes ESPNU, ESPNews, and the SECNetwork (but no Pac-12Net, boo hoo). The Orange package lets you stream to only one device. 7-day free trial. Best of all, prepay 3 months and get a free Roku 2 ($69.99 value), which includes Sling TV as an app - I need to replace my old Roku HD, so I ordered this today (they used to offer a free Roku Streaming Stick, a $49.99 value). Shipping is free. You also have the option of 50% off a Roku 3 (reg. $99.99). At the Sling TV site, just scroll to the bottom and click "FREE Roku 2". You can also get Apple TV for $89 (reg. $129). NOTE that your Sling TV login will NOT authenticate you for streaming live events through NBC Sports Live Extra.

Although Rio does not have that great a time difference with US (north-south vs east-west). But I'm guessing NBC will do it anyway for prime time.

Couple questions redbeard2008:What's the difference between Roku 2 and Roku 3? Isn't there a Roku 4 out too? So you pay the SlingTV subscription for a month to watch the Olympics and cancel anytime? Can you stream channels directly to your laptop by logging into their website or do you need the Roku device? I'm on the road a lot and use my Verzion LTE 4G Router to connect so this is a nice option for me.

They charged me $74.99 for the first three months of the Blue package - I get the Roku 2 for free (a $69.99 value). To me, the extra features of the Roku 3 aren't important (headphone jack, voice control, etc.). The Roku 4 is primarily aimed at users with 4K Ultra HD. I wanted to replace my old Roku HD anyway, so basically I'm getting the first three months for $5. I can cancel after the three months, or I can switch to the Orange package, which includes ESPN and ESPN2, and ESPNU, ESPNews, and SECNet in its Sports Extra package ($5/mo). They charge for full months (no prorating). Here's a full comparison of the features for the different Rokus: www.roku.com/products/compareAs of now, anyway, you cannot use your Sling TV credentials to log into NBC Sports Live Extra and stream live events. You can run Sling TV on your laptop, tablet, and mobile phone - the Blue package lets you view Sling TV streams on up to three devices, so you could be watching NBCSN, your wife Lifetime, and your kid the Cartoon Network (the Orange package is limited to one stream/one device). For "casting" online streams to a TV (through the Chrome browser), check out the Chromecast dongle (deals for low to mid $20), which works great for watching YouTube/FIVB matches on the TV (it actually pulls the stream directly from the YouTube server). The Blue Package gives you access to any coverage on NBC* and NBCSN. Living in Seattle, in 2012 I was getting even NBC's "live" primetime coverage delayed three hours - Sling will eliminate that. [* The NBC Channel in Sling TV's Blue Package is only available in select markets: Dallas-Fort Worth, Hartford, Conn., Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, San Diego, Washington D.C. and Philadelphia. They do say that content is available through "ondemand", through NBCSN, I presume, but probably not live.] The Blue package's World News Extra package ($5/mo) gives you access to CNBC and MSNBC, which also have Olympics coverage. Two other sports channels are included: FS1 and FS2, which carry some college volleyball.

Another article on viewing options: siliconangle.com/blog/2016/07/12/how-to-live-stream-all-the-events-from-the-2016-rio-olympics-on-iphone-android-roku-more/NBCSN, NBC *, USA, and Bravo are in Sling TV's Blue package ($25/mo). MSNBC and CNBC are in the Blue package's World News Extra package ($5/mo). [Sling TV has now moved CNBC and MSNBC to the Blue Package ($25/mo), meaning you don't have to pay another $5/mo just to get those two channels. I don't know if this is just for the Olympics or not.]The Golf Channel will carry Olympics golf coverage - it is in the Blue package's Sports Extra package ($5/mo). * Only in select markets: Dallas-Fort Worth, Hartford, Conn., Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, San Diego, Washington D.C. and Philadelphia (not Seattle, boo-hoo).

So, redbeard2008 I juast signed up for the free 7 day trial of SlingTV. Installed the PC app for Windows, but I don't think the stream quality is high enough. I'm sure it would look fine on a tablet, phablet or smart phone, but on a large monitor not so much. Does using a Roku device allow for a higher quality stream?

I'm getting excellent stream/video quality on my 40" LG LCD with Sling TV on the Roku 2, connecting through Wi-Fi with Comcast Blast Internet. The Roku 2 defaults to 720p, but you can step it up to 1080p (which I did). The Roku 2 also can connect directly to your router through Ethernet, which would increase throughput. On your computer, using the Sling TV app, click on Connections in the Settings menu and make sure "Best Quality" is selected. Also, make sure you have plenty of free space (I've got 25GB) available on your computer's hard drive.

Not sure what this means for watching NBC's primetime coverage on Sling TV - it does say content is available "on-demand" (through the NBCSN channel, I presume). (I've got NBC over-the-air and in my Comcast Economy Tier, so not a deal breaker for me.)

The only channel which looks like 480p quality is ESPN. I found a workaround, I just logged into espn.go.com/watchespn/ went into settings and pressed the "allowed" button under the "local storage" tab. It seems ESPN is the only sports channel which allows me to login into my SlingTV account via their website or app direct. I'll probably still buy a Roku 2 or 3 and try it direct via ethernet from my broadband router and direct to my large monitor via HDMI. Thanks.

For Sling TV, I'm seeing lower resolution with the app on my Window's laptop, but high definition on my Roku 2 and 40" LCD. Just as good as Netflix.

Will the FIVB be streaming matches via Youtube like they do for any other big international tournament? Anyone know?
I've got sling TV, but I'm not in one of the markets with NBC. ugh.

I'd think there's almost zero chance that they're allowed to stream on YouTube. NBC pays a LOT of money for those rights.
