That story isn't official confirmation, but boy do I hope it's true.

What will be FIVB's position on this, if indeed the volleyball team is banned. I imagine they've got to release an official press release ASAP.

I know they don't necessarily deserve it, but I am hoping they give it to the Dominican Republic on the women's side!
The only chance of that happening is if they give it to the highest FIVB ranked team.
I could see an argument for Turkey or Thailand, but how do you distinguish the two? Turkey would have earned a bid to the Olympic Qualifier. Thailand finished third of Asian teams in the Asian Qualifier, and 5th overall.
And also, why not Colombia over Thailand? Colombia finished third in its region too and 2nd in its Olympic Qualifier.
I would think they have to re-seed the pools.
I think obviously Thailand is the most deserving team. But as a huge fan of DR, I am hoping they can take Russia's place. It was sad to watch them lose De La Cruz at such a critical point in Olympic Qualification, only to get her back fresh off an injury, struggling to recover so much that she started float serving instead of jump serving.

Wouldn't they replace with a team from the same continent? To keep the original continental distribution the same?

Another question would be, can those countries send a squad to Rio at such a last minute? Thailand probably could, since they just finished their WGP not so long ago. Turkey, I''m not sure. DR? I don't know either. The bigger picture is whether the IOC push the responsibility of banning down to the individual sport federations (as some say they might). In that case, it will be a sea of hodgepodge and inconsistent rulings. Some federations will admit the Russians and others may not. FIVB probably will not want to deal with having to suddenly ban Russia and find a replacement team at the 11th hour, so if the decision comes down to the sport federations, I am guessing FIVB will be inclined to keep Russia, as a organizational or logistical issue. We'll know soon enough...

if true, Russia did it to themselves. Putin has been acting like a lunatic. Putin is responsible for the downing of the Malaysian Jet over Ukraine. Putin is messing around with our election right now. and so many other things Putin is doing. Please don't tell me that the athletes did not know. Of course, they all know that they were/are taking performance enhancing drugs.

Putin is messing around with our election right now. and so many other things Putin is doing. Please don't tell me that the athletes did not know. Of course, they all know that they were/are taking performance enhancing drugs. Perhaps. You can argue Putin is a "proud" successor of the Soviet sporting philosophy, win at all cost for the glory of your country. If that means doping, on a state-wide and systematic level, so be it. The Soviets were known to run a highly organized doping regime, but since anti-doping regulations and oversight were relatively weak back then, most of them weren't caught. But these days, its a different story, with WADA and media attention. The athletes themselves...I am divided. In some cases, their superiors ordered them to take the drugs. And they took the drugs obediently and without question, knowing full well what they are and what their conduct is. In those cases, I have no sympathy for them. In other cases...I might have a little sympathy. If they refuse to take the drugs they will be let go from the team, losing the Olympic spot they have trained so hard and long for. So they basically had no choice, reluctantly taking it or face exclusion (as some of the whistle-blowers can attest). So they are screwed by the system.

Russia deserves this. They (and the East Germans) won countless medals in the 70s and 80s by cheating. Their modern drug program is so pervasive that Maria Sharapova is suspected to have sourced her performance enhancing drugs from Mother Russia, even though she has lived in the United States since she was seven years old.

AP is saying no ban from IOC. Yeah just saw on BBC. Each sport federation can decide. Seems like a cop out. It's definitely a missed opportunity to make a stand against doping.

Well, according to the AP this morning, the IOC has decided against a complete ban on Russians from Rio, but I couldn't find any additional information as to the extent of the ban, and whether it affected the volleyball teams:
