Probably mostly because she's a Nebraska alum. Doesn't answer the question. My point is that she's an alumnus of Tennessee as well. Not a big deal. Someone gave me a good answer earlier in the thread. She is actually an "alumna". "Alumnus" is masculine. "alumna" is feminine. Plurals are "alumni" and "alumnae".

FYI: In track and field (and probably swimming, too), all athletes that participated in the preliminary heats of an event get the medal that the finalists receive. For example, if there are three preliminary heats plus the final of the 4x100m relay, there could be 16 gold medal winners. I don't know if there has ever been so many participants in a single event, but it's almost unheard of that only four athletes participate both the prelims and finals. In other events, the actual athletes don't get any medals at all. (equestrian) There is only one preliminary (semi finals) in the relays.

FYI, apparently USC is sending the most athletes to the Olympics of any university.

Yes, USC is sending most foreign athletes to Rio.
But as for US athletes (numbers vary plus/minus 2 depending on news source).

Nebraska and Penn St have 3 alumni each on the 12 woman roster of the USA Women's Volleyball Olympic Team. It is noteworthy that UConn has 5 alumni on the Women's Basketball Olympic team (Maya Moore, Diana Taurasi, Brianna Stewart, Sue Bird and Tina Charles) and 1 current Junior (Kia Nurse) on the Canadian Olympic WBB team plus the UConn WCBB coach, Geno Auriemma who is head coach. Some schools just do it better than others it appears. Did I leave any teams or schools out? Edit: Oops, maybe only 2 for Penn St since Nicole Fawcette didn't make the final 12-woman roster. One thing I don't understand is why Kelsey Robinson is considered (by many) a Nebraska player when she only spent 1 year there versus 3 years at Tennessee? Under the "for what it's worth" category, here is a quote from Kelsey Robinson from today's Lincoln Journal Star. "Honestly, it's the most crucial decision (Coming to Nebraska), that I ever made in my path to go to the Olympics. I can't say I would have had the same opportunity has I chosen a different school or chosen to stay (At Tennessee). Coach Cook is the one who reached out to (US Coach Karch Kiraly) and got me the tryout. Karch even told me he had no idea who I was until Coach Cook brought me up, so I owe my entire career to that."

The first three paragraphs of that article make a great point that we uber-fans forget sometimes. Obviously as fans of our schools we are rightly proud of the connection with these athletes. But really their college time was just another step in a long journey that led them to the Olympics. They, and their families, deserve more credit than any individual school, coach, or team. That said, sorry Nebraska -- we Tennessee fans still claim her too! You'll have to share!

The most telling part of the quote is KK told KB he had no idea who she was until Cook clued Karch in. Is it any wonder we've never won gold if uber talented All Americans aren't even on the Team USA radar unless and until a HC at one of a few select programs makes an introduction. Unbelievable.

You, of course have the option to view it differently.

Knowing Kelsey personally, I can tell you that she credits her success to Nebraska and wants to be remembered as a Husker. She also considers Nebraska as a "home away from home" and has been back to Lincoln a handful of times since her graduation during her very limited free time. Also, Mike, it was quite fitting that you brought up the analogy of best crowds! When my partner and I went to see Kelsey in Italy during the playoffs a few months ago, we were impressed by the large crowds, but she quickly remarked that they don't compare to Nebraska. She then gave very specific reasons as to why, and all of them made perfect sense. I guess you would have had to have been there to truly appreciate her explained nuances, but I don't think you would have had any troubles believing her.
