It's not about points, the commentators are wrong. It's whoever won h2h who gets ranked higher if two teams are tied. So Gibb/Patterson need the Qatar team to end up 1-2 rather than the Austrian one. And they'll still have to play a lucky loser match even if that happens. Nope, always about the points: In case of a tie in the pools (match points) during the round robin, the following rules will apply: Between two teams: The team with higher rally points ratio in the matches between all teams in the pool, is ranked higher. If a tie still exists by rally points ratio then the teams have the same position in ranking. Between three teams: If three teams have a tie in the main points, then the top teams are determined by the rally points ratio in the matches between the three tied teams. If a tie still exists then the teams have the same position in the ranking. Between four teams: The ranking is determined by the rally points ratio between all teams in the pool. If a tie still exists then the teams have the same position in the ranking. In the case of a tie in the pools (match points) at the end of the round robin, the following rules will apply: Between two teams: The team with higher rally points ratio in the matches between all teams in the pool, is ranked higher. If a tie still exists, then the tie is determined by the tournament seeding established at the General Technical Meeting (the better seed of the tied teams is the top ranked team, i.e. seed 6 is ranked higher than seed 7). Between three teams: Teams are ranked by the rally points ratios in the matches between the three tied teams. If a tie still exists then the teams still tied are ranked by the rally points ratio between all teams in the pool. If a tie still exists then the teams still tied are determined by the tournament seeding established at the General Technical Meeting (the better seed of the tied teams ranked higher, i.e. seed 12 is ranked higher than 13). So, in simplified from, Gibb/Patterson need either: Huber/Seidl to win or Jeffferson/Cherif to win while beating the Austrians by at least 8 aggregate points

I think Jefferson/Cherif just won by 8 aggregate points. Does that mean Gibb/Patterson are in round of 16?

It was a 2 point aggregate win. -3 in game 1, +2 in game 2, +2 in game 3.
Maybe that will stop Casey from being so arrogant out on the court now...

Not being a fan of Casey, doesn't stop me from rooting for them in any Int'l competition as long as they aren't playing Phil & Nick. They worked so hard for this, I have nothing but respect for both of those players. I'm sure it's heart wrenching not to have at least made the single elim.

I'm in the same boat, I'll root for Jake/Casey when they're playing internationally but I still despise the way Casey acts on the court after every big play he makes. I get that it's his thing and he likes that flashy style, it just doesn't do it for me as a fan. I'm sure some people love it and those people probably wish that Phil would show more emotion on the court. To each their own...

I'm not a fan of Patterson's antics, but I will say I love how almost every team gets excited and pumped after every play. Beach Volleyball by this older 30+ generation of USA players is very boring and uneventful to watch how robotic and unemotional these players are. At least Patterson shows emotion, and I have been one who has been arguably one of the harshest critics. Mayer, Dougherty, Rosie, Phil, Todd Rogers, Brunner, they all just have a very blah expression out on the court. They good players but there's no personality in that group.

Patterson and Gibb couldn't control the ball. Playing way too far from the net. Patterson is a good all around player but he doesn't make enough plays defensively to lose control of first ball contact. Unfortunately, Gibb has really taken a step back this Olympics. Terrible passing making it hard for him to sideout. If they don't clean up their passing and serve receive they are going to get blown out in the knockout round if they even make it.

Wait, sorry for the confusion, but don't they have a chance in the lucky losers or am I missing something?

Crabb bros, and the small teams making noise in this Olympics should boast well for them. Tri Bourne and someone.
